Has anyone here used stone (real or cultured) on the outside of their cabin?
I think stone looks great and it's no maintenance.

If you've used stone, post a pic!

Not yet. We will be using real stone from our property as the base for our four season porch. I want a limestone floor in the porch as well. I need to talk to our builder about the floor and porch this summer. Some ideas:

I agree with you Gersus that stone looks great and reduces maintenance. I plan to cover just the outside of my footing concrete with a stone veneer. But I won't do any more than that, because stone is a lot of work and it really is just for looks. It's all extra work, with time and money spent on something unnecessary that could be spent on other useful improvements (like finishing the building sooner).

But, if you bother, you'll have something beautiful to be very proud of like the nice picture above.

If you plan to do whole exterior walls, be aware that you need to plan for it. You'll need a full concrete footing to support the weight, and the footing needs to have a ledge on it for the stone to sit on.

Send us pictures of your stone hobbit cottage!

Well

I once mentioned cultured stone to my old school mason buddy. After the look I got I never made that mistake again.

I have plans for two projects once the weather breaks and it stays above 60 F regular. Current the locus point of the two projects is under 18" of snow.

I have a couple of creeks and a good size stream that runs through my property. Coming up with stone isn't too bad but having mined stone out of the stream I can tell you stone weighs a lot and you need a lot of stone for most any project. It is also slow work. (Block or brick goes much faster.) But the resulting product from stone gives such earthly beauty.

The first project is a stone walkway. Something fitting of an English cottage. (Stone fence w/ gate will come later when daughter traps strong back but weak mind into doing it for me or at least, with me.)

Second project will be an large slightly elevated fire pit. With so much of the cabin life being linked with campfires why not make it a showplace. It is the outdoor AV entertainment most nights.

Here is our limestone walkway. We are very fortunate to have a rock quary on our property with this beautiful stone. Add to that 2 miles of rocky shoreline and a builder whom is also a talented stonemason its worth the extra time for us.

Nice looking stone and cabin, Silverwaterlady. Stone on my property is this boring red sandstone, but it is what it is.

Hueyjazz - I like some kinds of cultured stone, some looks kind of fake. But it is easy to use and dimensionally uniform, which makes it easy to use. Generally lighter, too. To heck with your snooty mason friend- if you like it, use it.
