Hello all,
My first post here... I'm looking to build a 16' x 24' cabin on stilts. Where can I find some good information on how to construct one? I'd like to build this myself, with some help of some friends if I have to.
I'm pretty mechanically inclined and can build anything with metal, but a cabin construction would be new for me.
I'm near a bayou, so I want it on stilts. I'm thinking, as of right now, that I won't have electricity or running water for it. I have a well that will be close to it, it'll just be for sleeping mostly.
If I was to have a first question about the construction, it would be about how to build the platform or base to construct it on. I'm skilled with AutoCad and can do my own drawings also..
I'm thinking 24' x 24' on the platform with the cabin being 16' x 24'.
Thanks guys..

I would try a techno metal post system. http://www.technometalpost.com/en/home/ They have dealers throughout the US and Canada. You don't need concrete, no formwork, rebar, waiting for concrete to set, etc. They come out and screw the piles into the soil and then you can start framing right away. For all kinds of soil conditions and they provide structural bearing certificates for the building inspector.

Another alternative is pole-barn construction, where you stick treated poles in the ground and build around them. Since the poles are fairly deep in the ground they provide lateral stability. Not sure if this is the best idea in the bayou where there is high ground water. Numerous books on pole construction are available, just google pole barn or pole building.

We have soft soils here and we sometimes use pipe driven into the ground. Use a pipe driver( piece of 6" pipe, 18" long with end welded on and handles welded to sides) for each post drive up to 3 x 2" pipe into ground( if a pipe needs extending, then place a 1 1/2" 4' section inside last pipe and place next pipe over stub, then keep driving unless you gave a welder) like a tripod until they hit solid or cannot be driven anymore(start to bend) then tie tops together with rebar and pour a post footing. Form your post up from the footing and set your height. For a platform 24 x 24 I would look at a minimum of 9 posts. Cantilever your platform over the posts at the ends by 1-2 feet. Should give you post spacing of 10'.

This is my stilt cabin in a flood plain.
Get scaffolding...that's my advise.
