Anyone install or have experience with wood veneer or wood panelling? We are thinking about installing it for our cabin. We find the t&g pine or cedar interior look too much like an old school trappers cabin and we want something with a bit more of a modern feel. I can't believe i am actually considering it since my dad installed various panelling in our basement as kids (of course it was whatever was on sale so it never matched...ha ha).
I am thinking about putting thin plywood as a backing so the wall isn't flimsy like you would find in a mobile trailer/modular home. Any other way to do this?
How do you make the panels seemless? We are going with a panel that doesn't have lines so the seam might stick out. Wondering how much it will show up.
The other option we considered was sanding plywood and finishing it with some sort of surface treatment. I like this option but the wood veneer sounds like it would give the same sort of effect.

I used 4 by 8 panels of luan - see http://catskillcabin.blogspot.com/2011/07/july-in-medusa.html for details, you will have to scroll down some. I was going to slap molding on to hide the seams, but realized that would only look like I was trying to hide the seams. So I left it, and I like it this way. Good luck!

I used what Lowe's calls a "utility panel" - very pretty on one side, light, and cheap. I also did this on the ceiling. At joints that couldn't be butted with factory edges I used firring strips. I like the look.

VC_fan, that looks really nice! We are also using some furring strips for trim. It is a great savings and I like the simple look. I love those exposed ceiling beams.

This is what we are using. In bedroom & bathroom it will be installed as usual, vertical. But in the living area we are thinking of instaling it horizonal to look like wood siding. With the exception of the wall you see when you come in will be 1/2 cut pine logs.
