I was talking to a sales rep at lowes about siding and he said that smatside 4x8 panels can be put on right on the studs without any type of sheathing before ! Has anyone done this or is this not a good idea ? Thanks !!

Just like T1-11 siding, it is made in 4x8 so you don't have to sheath before......

Depends on the series being sold. LP has three and only the Precision series is rated as a structural panel. The architectural and foundation series are not rated as a structural panel.
LP has full information with clearances, etc on their website. No warranty if not followed.
That said it can be done, but I somehow prefer a structural panel like osb under a weather resistant barrier with something cosmetic over that to finish off the wall.

Well thank you for the vote of confidence, but you are too generous. I have used the LP products and just remember there are 3 varieties and only one is approved as a structural panel.
