Hi guys,
Great site! I've been reading through a bunch of posts about floor construction and had a question.
I'm looking at putting up a small cabin in some timber here in Iowa. Because it's near a creek, I want to elevate it off the ground.
I plan on building a 12 by 16 cabin. It may be used once or twice in the winters maximum.
So that being said I was thinking about framing the floor on piers. Instead of insulating the area between the joists, I want to install the subfloor (plywood) then install 3" of high density insulation, over it, following by another layer of plywood.
I now this only gives me an R15 insulation on the floor, but for it's use and size I thought that would be sufficient.
It seems like I would eliminate the need to protect the insulation under the cabin from rodents/etc. and eliminate thermal bridging of the joists.
The walls would use conventional build/insulating methods and the door would be framed to accommodate the increased floor height.
Anyone see a problem with method or done this type of construction? Thanks in advance.

I put 2" foam between the joists and did not protect it. So far I haven't had any rodent problems. We don't use our place during the winter and we aren't heated or cooled. In the early spring and late fall the floor is cool but not icy. I think R10/2" would be enough. With that 3" screws will reach well into your subfloor.

Sounds like a good plan, Schlot. But MikeOnBike's solution of putting the rigid under the floor avoids the second layer of plywood. But, maybe the little buggers would get into the rigid, I don't know.

Forgot to mention I used pink Foamular 150. It's pretty rigid and doesn't seem very vermin friendly but I'm in southern Idaho in the high (6000') desert and probably have different vermin than you do.

We also installed the pink foamualr 150 between our floor joists (last May). So far not issues with any vermin... Our place is in Northern Minnesota, mostly rock.
