Project _North I am thinking about using a cork floor in my kitchen. Also like the idea of a penny floor in the mud room.

Had a bat too.

I don't know which is worse...bats or mice? At least bats eat bugs...and lots of them; 3000 a day! and they only have 1 baby a year and hibernate for the winter. Mice? not sure what purpose they serve-none I think! But bats...that flying around at night while you try to sleep-ugh...so disturbing

Hope it was a one time thing for you...I'm sure it eventually found its way out

Agree with Hattie, that penny floor looks slick! I don't know that I would do it in my cabin, but it sure is easy to figure out cost per square foot Easy to clean too... just mix some vinegar with table salt and the pennies look like they just came from the mint.
silverwaterlady- I have to agree with you on the mice. Every cabin in the woods has them and after five years of battling the critters, I'm get rid of what little carpeting I have and replacing with wood floor or tile.

I won't leave the floor bare. I plan on putting either multible coats of polyethylene or clear expoxy.

I have a camper on our property that I lived in for several summers and now while my cabin was built. It has both carpet and vinyl. The vinyl can be chilly, but is VERY easy to clean. The carpet is already losing its loft, but is warm on the toes.

You have to know your property. Ours has sandy soil and a gravel pad. Lots of sand and gravel track their way inside, so I would opt for throw rugs over some other surface. Think about what your property is like, and make your decision from there.

ok.. I will bite.. how do you mouse-proof a cabin? I just make sure there are so many sticky traps around under the cabin that they don't make it to the cabin.. but I am all for ideas :p

trollbridge.your cabin is so beautiful.as the children are.
i love the area rug.i just pulled up tons of wall to wall carpeting in our home.omg.it was so disgusting.carpet that was at least 15 yrs old.i had a carpet cleaner and thought i was getting the dirt n grime.nope.horrid.coughed for days from all the creepy dust, dirt and grime.we went with tile flooring which we laid and then area rugs.its a bit colder than with the wall to wall carpet but...sure is cleaner.i love this.i was gonna put carpets in my kitchen at the cabin to have warm feet.now i rethink this cause of knowing how dirty wall to wall carpeting is.your place is just great.

Since we do not have electricity, wood floors is the only way to go - with a few area rugs here and there for comfort. I like the look and feel. As for mice - a funny story (for me anyway) about a neighbor who had mouse-proofed his place pretty well and then he had friends come to visit. We put them up in our old camp (with lots of mice) and they had a cereal box with them that they brought down to the neighbor's place the next day and left it there. As expected, the "trojan horse" box held visitors and they chewed their way out and the neighbor has had lot of messes but can't find the culprits. Beware of cereal boxes from strange places.
