We are building a small 12 x 16 cabin and have decided to add "hay hood" roof extensions to each end of the gambrel type roof. We have the trusses up as well as the ridge pole which extends out from each end of the building. I am having trouble figuring out how to cut the compound miters to frame in the hay hood. That is, the pieces that will go from the end of the ridge pole back to the roof.
Any ideas? Is there a trick to determine the correct miters?
Thanks,
James

James,
I assume that you have not yet determined the angles. Is this correct?

If you don't know the angles, and don't want to do the math, take a board that is longer than what you need. Hold it in place and mark the inside and outside on the lower end using a block which is as thick as the widest gap. Saw along the two lines. Hold it back up and mark the upper end. It helps if you first cut a rough compound angle to reduce the gaps to a minimum. Cut it a little long if you aren't sure of the fit and make any needed adjustments to the angles as you shorten it to length.
If you know the angles, lay them out with your speed square and just make the cut.
To figure the angles, set up two right triangles and do the math.
