I've been devouring countless books, news articles and internet forums on building cabins, most of which are really detailed and provide great information. However, there aren't many resources that I've found that provide a beginner's look at foundations. I'd like to know if anyone knows of a resource that can answer the most basic questions (i.e. what types of foundation along with their advantages/disadvantages, how far apart to space foundation piers given certain floor joist sizes, etc) and explain in concise language why certain things should be avoided or pursued. Thank you for your time.

If you're technical, each soil type and climate needs different requirements. As I am a contractor, I have code books. Someone here brought up a site called ''Maximum Span Calculator'' . Check that out.
