Could anyone tell me if a metal roof is loud when raining? Going with a metal roof on my small cabin on the family farm. I would assume with sheathing and insulation, etc... the noise would be muffled.

Mine's not.
Decking, felt, and lots of screws. That'll keep it quiet.

At first, our shack was just metal over purlins. Much louder than I thought it would be. With heavy rain, my son and I were sitting on the floor playing cards and could hardly hear each other talk. Since then, I added insulation and thin (5mm) plywood as a finish surface. Now it's the nice sound you'd expect from metal roofing.

Using 7/16" or 5.8" OSB sheathing over the rafters/trusses sharply reduces the metal roof noise as well as making a much more solid and rogid roof diaphragm. Then a weather resistant barrier as Martian mentioned. Then screw down the metal, but don't squash the neoprene washers too much. If you also have ceiling insulation you will not be bothered by the noise any more than on other types of roofing.

Honestly, when its a normal rain, I have to open my patio door to enjoy the sound of rain on a tin roof. I used purlings on 18" center but have 18" of insulation in the attic. I would recommend OSB like Don says; however, if like me, you find 4X8 sheets are just too much to handle by yourself in the wind and decide to use purlings, take heart, its not noisy.

My roof is 2X8's, .58" OSB, Ice Guard G, then metal roof. You can barely hear the rain when sleeping in the loft and it makes for a really quite place when it isn't.
No insulation or wall board on the inside yet either...

As said, a metal roof is noisy. I added 5/8th"OSB and tar paper over 2 by 10 rafters, then insulated the roof. Definite overkill - I do not hear the pitter-patter of the rain on the roof and kind of miss it. In fact, I do not know it is raining until it comes through the open window.

Not at all. But lay it over sheeting. Not the horizontal strapping. I have an attic, ceiling is insulated, metal roof over sheeted 1/2" plywood. But I stayed in it once before the ceiling was even installed and there was no noise at all when it was raining. I suppose if I had a huge monsoon type downpour, I may barely hear something.

If there is no sheeting under it then it is rattly noisy but with backing it quiets right down.
