ive seen roofs built using rafters with a center ridge beam and without. can someone tell me what the structural benefits are with using one? does the beam carry any of the weight? does the extra wall studs that are put under the rigde beam down to the subfloor carry much roof weight? how about 'collar ties'..........a 2x4 or 2x6 that spans from one rafter to the opposing rafter roughly a 1/4 to 1/3 of the way down. are these neccessary?

Collar ties that set on top of wall and are nailed to rafter tails are a real good idea. A ridge board is more of a convenience for nailing. If you use a wood or metal plate to join rafter tips, that works great. Any posts from ridge to floor would make a strong roof, but rarely seen. Any collar ties not at the bottom are of little help. By the way most building codes require rafters on 16'' centers, while trusses can be 24'' centers.
