I used Cabot brand oil-base transparent cedar stain on the T-1-11 siding on my cabin last summer. It penetrated well. Applying the stain before you install the boards and battens while they are horizontal will result in much less waste and more even coverage over the surface of the boards. I used a 4 inch wide natural bristle brush to apply the stain that I kept wrapped in aluminum foil between uses to keep the bristles fresh. Don't forget to apply stain to the end grain of the boards. The stain cost me almost $36.00/gallon (before sales tax) at Lowe's. I have also used Olympic brand water-base stain. My preference is for the oil-base stain as the color appears more vivid and less washed-out looking than the water-base stain after almost a year exposed to the weather.

I've used both olympic and cabot oil based stain, I like them both quite a bit. I've also used some home depot Bher water based stain, which actually worked pretty well, but is seriously hurting on the flat surfaces I put it on just last year.

I have always had good experience with Behr Stains.
