Hi there, I have already built the cabin and now I wish I would have dug a cellar underneath before hand! Any advice would be helpful...the cabin sits on a post foundation that is completly enclosed around the perimeter...do I cut a door in the floor inside the cabin and dig by hand? UGG! or dig from outside? anyone done this??? Thanks Dave

Same here. Wish I'd dug a cellar too.

Looks pretty flat there. How are you going to drain it? Or ensure it can't fill with water?

I do think I will put a small crock and some
drain tile covered with gravel just for insurance.
What I can't figure out is how to build the
walls since I think it will be under the cabin
or under the porch?? Blocks, treated wood,
poured concrete?? Treated wood lasts forever
here in the sand!! To keep exposure to a minimum
while in the caller I could cover the walls
interiors with???

I am not sure but wondering if you used treated wood, is there any chemical leaching to worry about?

I do not think there would be any chemicals leaching.
It is REALLY DRY under the cabin floor anD
it is fully enclosed around the perimeter!

Maybe you could use a plastic 55 gallon drum. If it had a gravel base and a drain to relieve the water presssure it should not heave upward

At this stage I wouldn't want to be digging out a big hole under my foundations. Why not locate the root cellar under a storage shed or garden workshop?

Hi Sustainusfarm. I really love your cabin! Would you be able to post more pictures of it? What are the rough dimensions?

If you do decide to dig a basement, I would dig from the outside . rent or buy a bobcat or mini hoe . Depends on the depth of the excavation. You can have an outside cellarway. I have dug a cellar by hand , It is a huge job, if you decide to dig by hand . I guarantee, you won't want to do another.
