I need to figure out permits. I'm confused by what I read on my township's site.

What does a permit entail? I know it costs about $12 per $1000 of the project, which is fine, and I need to provide drawings. But does it go beyond that? That alone doesn't sound difficult and it would be worth it in order to build something a little larger than ten by ten. I want something closer to 16 x 16 with a little porch. I don't need electricity or water.

So what else will happen? I know it has to be something bad because everyone tries to avoid it.

It's not all bad..
I just don't want to be told what I can and can not do on my own land that I bought, and paid for.. Only reason I am skipping it..
But honestly if I told them I wanted to build a recreation cabin, they would probably just give me a permit no problems. A lot of places wont allow you to build a shed on you land without a house on it..

Or they will let you build a shed, but you can't have electricity, plumbing, or HEAT! Which is why a lot of people use water tanks, ,solar panels, and portable heaters.

If they allow a heated shed.. Cool, but use at your own risk, because you legally aren't allowed to stay in it. A recreational cabin would e better, because they would allow you to camp in it, a certain number of weeks a year. Some places only allow 15 days at a time. Stuff like that. But how would they know how long you've been camping unless they are watching you? They wouldn't..

You need to call the code officer and ask. Just tell them what you want to do, they will probably help you more than hinder..

PS.. I'm not an expert at anything.. One of the guys here will be more educated on this subject. Just thought I'd put my 2 cents in there..

i would skip the permit build my 16' x 16 ' and enjoy it!!!!!

Right, if you don't do that everything is just hearsay.

Even if you don't like the answers at least you know what laws you will be breaking

I agree with Don. Would you rather spend time and money only to have it possibly declared illegal or would you rather know ahead of time what you can and cannot do.
There are ways of accommodating cabin needs w/o resorting to chance.

I called and didnt give my name.. told them the truth about my intentions and the code guy was awesome. The ONLY thing he cared about was that I was far enough from property lines, I purchased the $25.00 permit, and he got to look at my woodstove install when I decided to put it in to make sure it was safe. No big deal.... call

great!!!!! and true!!!! ;-)........just when you call the building/zoning office tell you are on the other side of town/county/etc. that your property is at...and that your name is MtnDon......:-)

I had about the same experience. Zoning office didn't care as long as whatever I built was 300' from the property line. Building inspector didn't care what I built, my property is over 5 acres and we have an Ag. exemption in this state. Gotta have legal septic and electrical for a home, but not for a "shed". They made the rules and I guess I can live with them
