My wife really likes the look of board and batten siding so we will probably finish the outside of our yet-to-be-constructed cabin in this manner next year. I was looking at this link from a local sawmill and it is very clear on how to space the boards, nail the ends, and nail the battens.

What I would like to know is:
How far should I space the nails over the length of the board? 6", 12", 16"?
Do I need to install additional blocking in the walls behind the sheathing to be used as nailers or will just nailing into the sheathing be sufficient?

I put horizontal 2x4 blocks between the studs on 24" centers. I woudln't trust just the sheathing as backer for wide 1x boards.

I prefer the blocking or purlings a little closer together than Malamute. 16" centers works well for me.
