What do you think of this?

I expected to see something in the comments regarding how he did this, but it seems like a real love fest.

Just couldn't be that much more work to notch it in, and you could still use your ledger board trick just to make it easier to place them.

A sad waste of time for both the construction effort and the time making the video.

Viewing it is also a waste of time and saddest of all is the effort and time spent by viewers who will copy his methods, not to mention money spent building an inferior product. He sounds like he knows what he is doing so many viewers with the same, or a lesser, skill level will be lulled into a false sense of confidence.

I will give credit for his making a square and level start, but when he started nailing in rim joists and so on I quit watching and went back to my book.

Youtube can be a useful tool but anyone can post just about anything they want to.

My opinion. YMMV.

He just likes to post videos and make $ off the ads.

I watched it all, to his credit he doesnt make claim to being more than what he is, and he does have cred for building several livable/usable cabins for himself and wife for 20 some years from Alaska 'homesteading' and points south.
I was hoping he would lap the T-111 down over the rim joists, the exposed edges of the plywood floor isnt good, and Id have put in some weatherstrip between the bird-blocks and purlin.
Yeah he could do some things better, but he knocked out a useable little cabin pretty quick and efficient and imo it will likely be standing and useable in 30 years.
I say that because the one we did in '83-'84 (and the '83 part was later in the year just like his to dried in), had mistakes too, and it is still going strong.
In fact, we wish we could have relocated it to our current site, it was a far better build that the one we have there.

I admit I enjoy watching his videos, but I would agree that his construction techniques leave a bit to be desired.

I think he is a member here and has corrected it. We all gave him guidance and he followed through.

That's why I put the second post there, should have added more detail.

In another video he does things correctly.

But like ICC, I didn't get past that first part.

But he left the post with bad /poor practices up and still available to mislead the unsuspecting. That is poor practice too. At the very least he should post a warning.

The internet is a wealth of information..good and bad. Dont go by what any single non qualified person does or says.

With that being said I have watched alot of Bushradicals videos for many years. There entertainment not a how to.

Agree.

This is what what useful to some degree of the thumbs down. It was a signal that something, in an instructional video, might be wrong.

I couldn't find a negative comment and I scrolled down a lot, which seems odd.

It would be easy to add some extra 2x6 blocking undercut into the support legs and lag screwed on to bear under the perimeter joists. For a small structure this isnt horrible and has access to upgrade.

There are also easier ways to build a small building and not need any bracing too. For instance just build up the blocking more.

I agree with gcrank1's sentiment - better practices could've been used in some areas, but I bet it'll be standing just fine for a long time. Some of the practices may be inferior, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're downright "bad".
