Hello! I'm seeking ideas/suggestions for inexpensive unconventional/upcycled siding options. I'm working with my 10 yo to build him a cabin on my property this summer. I'm hoping this will be a tremendous learning opportunity for him. We're trying to follow the lowest budget possible by using reclaimed or salvaged materials, which is his first lesson: patience and bargain hunting. Anyway, I know a lot of folks go with T111 as a budget friendly option. Has anyone used a different material/method of siding their cabin that was out-of-the-box, but effective? Thanks!!

Have you picked up a book on building small sheds and utility buildings? They are often in the 'books section' at the big-box home improvement centers.

Coincidentally, a neighbor at my city house is replacing 100' of old redwood fence. Did I want it? Silly question. I hauled it out yesterday, still in panels. Weathered but not cracked. I'll probably use it as fencing again but one could use it for rustic siding, or even run it through a planer.

Pallets? Bit of a pain to disassemble them, but they are the right price!

When we had our house re-sided, my 15 year old took the old vinyl siding and used good sections to side his shed. He found shed being given away, so we disassembled and brought home pieces. He and his friends re-assembled. He bought new shingles, and a door and windows from second hand sources. Now it's all his!

I used some recycled corrugated metal roof panels for siding on my cabin....at the time it was about 30¢ a square foot, but shortly after that , "vintage" rusty metal became very trendy, and it's increasingly hard to find now at a reasonable rate as interior designers from the city buy it all at top price to use inside high-end bars and restaurant renos.
