Well, I have been away from the cabin for a while as my son asked if I could possibly build him a bedroom in the basement. So that has been my priority for the last few weeks.

However, I got a chance to go out this weekend and bring the cabin a little further along. Almost got all the vapour barrier up (sigh short 10ft of poly). I was shocked at the difference 6mm of poly made. It was toasty in there and last night was -25C.

Unfortunately I'm running out of jobs that can be completed over a weekend in the cold. After I finish the insulated floor, I'm not sure what else to do. Most everything requires multiple days of "curing" time where things must be kept warm. I guess maybe start hanging drywall. However getting materials in is starting to be an issue with the snow.

A few more. The one is our solution for getting temporary power in from the generator. It was shocking how much air that window was leaking with only a small opening.

Looking great traveller. With a wood stove I bet you could slap 2 coats of mud on the walls in a single day. Granted you would prob wear out before one coat is done on a structure that size. Wood stoves make things dry really fast. I would hesitate to put drywall up and do the first rough coat in the bad areas. The bad areas usualy crack again. Before ther fully dry anyway.

I would probably be Ok if I did it early Saturday and we left late Sunday. That should give it enough time. For first coats I usually use a Proset type product (sometimes called Hot mud). Its a chemical cure and not "drying", but it needs warmth for that cure.

I really want to do the fireplace surround, but I don't have good experiences with Thinset in the cold. LOL, and I would have to temporarily remove the stove so I could tile there. So that will have to wait till spring.

Looks good. Are you going to drywall the ceiling? Looks like it would be a tough job. I was going to do mine (15' max height) but went with cedar t&g.

Looks great! Are you keeping that catwalk?

Any pictures of what you did for your rafter framing before you added the insulation? Looks like you added some additional members to give some structure where the plates are at the rafter joints.

I'm %90 sure I will drywall the ceiling. However I will use 16ft sheets so I only have 1 butt joint to mud. With 3 people and the scaffold, it shouldn't be too hard. The long horizontal joints will be covered with battons (caulked and painted the same color as the ceiling). That way I don't have to try and mud/tape that strange angle and keep it dead straight.

Its funny you aren't the first person to ask, but no the catwalk is just temporary so I could work without the scaffold (a little sketchy using a ladder on scaffold).

As to blocking, we added 2x4 blocking near the ridge. We alternated, one to the right of the plate, one to the left for the length of the building. We also added 2x2 inset between the plates to flatten each of those runs once we add drywall. We used a 6ft straight edge, but I'm still not super happy. I suspect I will be using a whole lotta shims when installing the drywall.

Real nice job man ! I remember putting the insulation in ours. What a difference. Now I'm in the process of getting 122ea 12' long 1x6 TnG topcoated n freighted out n installed. To finally get it done.
Your going to look back n be pretty proud you pulled a project like this off. And the dreams about how you are going to spend your time with your family n friends will be even better.

I know how you feel, i had both sections of scaffold up this weekend inside my place to put up that collar tie and i didn't care for that sketchiness at all!

I think having drywall up there you will find it brightens up the room.

Thanks all.. Its been a fun project, even if I set my timelines a little too tight..

I have questions about your TnG! Are you planning to just brad nail them to the studs? You are having them topcoated, is that just primer and you will final paint once installed?

I have been looking into TnG as not only will it be easier for 1 person, but it should add a whole bunch of sheer strength to the roof structure. Sigh, its just the cost that is hard to swallow. My pricing is about 4X higher than drywall.

Looks great!

I put pine t&g on my ceiling, drywall on my walls, wood floors....definitely expensive for the t&g, but it looks great in my opinion.....I didn't want everything in the cabin to be wood as I find it to be a bit monotonous.

I nailed them through the tongue with an air nailer so the nails were hidden, and we stained them on the ground before installing them.....If you go this route id go for a lighter stain to keep the room bright....

Keep up the great work!

Related question on the plastic. If I sprayed foam say one inch thick where the roof sheeting meets the Rafter tops, could one forgo the plastic? Thanks

Here in Alberta, if you are sticking to the code you need a completely sealed envelope. So if you spray foam, you usually need to spray foam the whole building.

OR

If you did that, you could forgo the plastic on the ceiling, but you would need to wrap the plastic from the walls up over the top plate and use a double seal (acoustic seal, plus tape).
