Ordering my metal roof for my cabin and was wondering how much overhang would be best for a 12/12 pitch. The cabin is 25'x32'. I was going to order in 20' pieces which would give me just about 24" of overhang on the eaves. Not sure if this is overkill on the overhang or if 12-18" would be more appropriate. Any thoughts or suggestions?

More overhang equals more protection for the foundation, so that's a positive. Only question is does more overhang negatively affect the uplift calculations? I don't have to do any calculations for my upcoming build, but might be something important to consider.

I have 18" and I consider that the bare minimum. It puts the water about 12" from my building. Just enough to keep things dry.

I have about 3' on a 6/12(?) and for me it is just enough. Our rains rarely seem to come straight down and I want it away from the structure.

Some people, like me, like to do winter and summer calculations for sun angle. If one is lucky or plans right, like me, an overhang can be set to shade the windows in summer and allow the sun to strike the glass in the winter. Vertical sizing of the windows may have to be adapted in some cases.

Also, steep roof and lots of overhang, is it a single story? I ask because the view from a window will be impeded also. I use about 16 to 18" out from the wall minimum. Just make sure your roof metal hangs over the fascia flashing but 1 to 2 inches.

On our cabin with 12/12 pitch I did mine 3' over . It was important that the snow does not pile up on the side of the building. I feel the further the drip line is away from the cabin the better.
On our house they are 6'. Leaving a nice dry storage area. We can see the mountains just fine. Starting to get termination dust now
