I have always wanted to make a cabin and now am now thinking of an idea and looking for opinions.
I envision a cabin on piers. The joists system could resemble typical deck framing, but possibly could utilize some pallets. I am envisioning double wall construction using short (roughly 32â€) pallet boards stacked/nailed on top of each other. The inner and outer wall would be tied together with short lengths of pallet boards and would allow for insulation between the two walls. It will be like a log cabin within a log cabin but the logs are 3/4†by about 4â€.
I envision construction being pretty much a one man operation and done as pallets are accumulated and cut apart.
Any thoughts and comments appreciated.

Im a complete novice but have a little experience with breaking down and using pallets on a couple projects. They are a bit of a pain and a lot of the wood used is prone to cracking and splitting. Doesn't seem structurally sound. My opinion is if you are going to go through the effort of building something do it as well as possible. If its on the cheap try craigslist or there are usually some re-use stores in any decent sized town. Although it sounds cool I think the majority of folks on here are going to agree.

Ime pallet wood makes better firewood than building material.

If your building with pallets dont bother with a foundation. The only thing I built completely our of pallets was a 4x6ft chicken coop. Complete with clear plastic roof. I couldn't give the thing away and ended up crushing it and burning it. Like GC said..turns out it's better firewood.

Im all for recycling/re-purposing, been doing it all my life, it was the culture I grew up in. So I have had my go at skids (and not just one time)....just trying to pull one apart is an exercise in frustration; and breakage. Give it a go, pull some apart and see what you think. Imo and e your energies and efforts will be better spent finding a building locally that the owner wants removed/torn down for the salvage. You will end up with real lumber far more suitable to build with.

Gotta watch it, many pallets are treated with a fungicide that would be very unhealthy to build a building or even furniture with.
