Fwiw, my philosophy is If I dont make a mess I (emphasis on the I) dont have to clean it up. My last experience with a roller was that after a certain roller speed was achieved the paint fling made it father from the intended surface; ie, thinkin Id get done sooner by goin faster was not the result. That might be another 'Murphyism'.

On the right (light) is clear semi gloss lacquer. Left (dark) is vegetable oil, all I had kicking around, applied over a week ago. Feels dry..
So do I run the panels all the way to the window openings, and leave a gap above the flooring?

Trim is made to cover gaps. If you dont make gaps you dont need to trim? Ive done it both ways 'depending'. Contractors dont take the time to make no gaps; Ive got time. Afaik 'code' doesnt yet require trim, does it? Your call, what can you live with.

Thands crank1. I never thought of running the panels right up to the trim that goes on the sills, whatever that is called. But I guess you can. I'm nowhere near that good, so I guess I can come as close as I get and put the trim over the panels.
I've seen sheetrock not go all the way to the floor, maybe for water protection or to enable flooring changes, I'll do the same with the panels and cover with baseboards.

Finally tacked up some panels yesterday for a look see. Too light and bland, plus the seams really show. Found a couple gallons of stain in the shed. I like the reddish one, which is Behr 502 Redwood outdoor deck stain. The other's label is torn up even worse, also outdoor something.
I know it'd be dark, but barring that any reason I couldn't use it? Kinda goes, since I'm in a tunnel of redwoods around here. 20210218_083154_resi.jpg

Wonder if that stain will darken over time? Im inclined to go lighter at first, I can always go darker with another or a different coat.

Lighter is always better unless you are a teenager into dark stuff; goth, whatever.
You can only restain darker if you don't clear coat the lighter coat after the first stain.

It isnt that bad, Paul. When the panel is actually on the wall in a living space the way light hits it and reflects is often different than in a 'test' scenario. Same thing happens to me in choosing/comparing paint chips, etc. That means the lighter stain will look darker on the real wall.

Thats the way my 3,4,5" x 3/4" t&g cherry looks in my home living room. All I treated it with was one coat of 50/50 odorless mineral spirits (still had odor until it offgassed) and boiled linseed oil; think that was back about '88. It has darkened some but that is Ok at home with grid electric and lots of windows. It would be far too dark at our cabin.

On another note, I was going to use the staple gun with brads but I think I might just hand nail. Tried hand nailing the brads but they are so thin they bend.
Would just regular finishing nails do? No plating?

Still farting around. I tried the redwood stain on a panel, terrible, looks like someone tossed a pizza at it. Reread this thread and all the light color recommendations, went to Ace hardware. The paint guru guy there set me up with a quart of Minwax clear satin wipe on poly, said it's the stuff. So I did a panel and it looks pretty nice (photo doesn't do it justice).
The brush on same stuff was the same price, I'm guessing it's thicker giving more bang for the buck? Anyway this goes on real easy with a rag, can says 2 or 3 coats. Going to need a gallon if that's the case.
