Trying to find a outhouse pedestals/cones for my upcoming build. It seems like the options are extremely limited with the cheapest one being just under $200 from Canada. Is it that "$hitty" of a market that not many people manufacture them? I would just think with all the parks in the USA that there would be more options.
Does anyone have or seen alternatives? My wife doesn't want the traditional bench style for cleanliness purposes so a pedestal is the way we need to go.

This is where I got mine. I couldn't find anything less expensive....I think that's exactly it, not a big market. Stainless ones for park vault toilets aren't cheap, either.

Look around and you might find a piece of galvanized drain pipe or large PVC pipe that would work as a pedestal. PVC would be easy to keep clean and won't rust. I have a traditional bench seat, but inset a plastic bucket (hole in the bench is just the right size to catch the lip of the bucket) with the bottom cut out to keep "stuff" from ending up on the wood. Also easy to hose down the inside of the bucket occasionally.

Been about 10 years since I got mine and I think it was from the spot Nate linked. At the time it was the cheapest out of very few options.

This is what I used:

Install it upside down, cut a hole in the bottom (now the top), install a toilet seat. About $35-$40 and done.

That's a pretty great alterntive. Being 4" higher than an ADA level toilet do you find it too tall?

Cut it down if it's to high. Or recess it into the floor.
I think at $200 for the fiberglass one I would make a circle with very thin plywood and cover it with fiberglass. Fiberglass is not that difficult to work with.

I have had one of the Far North Fiberglass pedestals installed at my cabin outhouse for 15 years. It's still in near perfect condition, although some of the screws I used to mount it to the floor are a little rusty - I will use stainless screws when I make a new and bigger one next year.
I really like how easy it is to clean, and how close it feels to a real toilet. I would definitely buy again if I needed to.

The outhouse at our cottage has a conventional bench-seat outhouse. The cedar boards in the kick panel (behind your calf when seated) were stained from urine spray. I replaced those boards, and mounted a white plastic deflector (cut from a piece of shower surround) under the bench that deflects urine down to pit. That has worked well to protect the new kick panels.

I had the Far North pedestal in an outhouse I built in 2005. It burned down last summer, but the concrete floor with the 18" hole is still good. It was painful to see that the toilet is now $175 plus shipping to California, but it's a no-brainer I should just buy the one that I know will fit automatically.

far north fiberglass is just down the street. Funny they are not more widely available. Seems strange you have to order one from the far North Yukon.

I'm going to frame up the outhouse on this platform so I can have the poo drop into a shortened 55 gal. plastic drum that sits underneath that the user will cover their business with a scoop of sawdust. Above I want to install a fiberglass toilet pedestal with a pee diverter. The poo will go into a compost after several uses and return to the land after composting. box_for_poo.jpg

I just set up the extra wide one, added a plastic pee shield. Found it at thrift shop $20.

Nate, Are you happy with your purchase from Far North? I have spent the last several days searching for a good quality, pedestal/cone, and have not found anything with the exception of one amazing fiberglass pedestal in Africa!😉
Your thoughts?

The best place to buy these is from Logic Plastics. They sell them direct in Canada and through Amazon in the states. Their quality is by far the best compared to anything out there.
Watch out for fiberglass ones. They are often rough on the inside and toilet paper and "other stuff" sticks to the rough surface. Also, other plastic toilet pedestals are not sized to fit standard toilet seats properly. The one I got from Logic Plastics is perfect in every way. Smooth, easy and somewhat self-cleaning and it fits the toilet seat nicely. Logic Plastics toilet pedestal

The above post is straight Spam. Expensive, yes, but these things are very difficult to even find.
Several posts up the page, NorthRick posted a great DIY idea for ay DIY'er who wants a pedestal type base for a privy. It's a Home Depot sump pump basin, turned 180 degrees and customized.
I have one at my cabin. Quite pleased. It took some hunting through the toilet seat selection to find one that had the least clearance between lid, seat and base.
If I find a photo I will post. I know I have some someplace, but it may take a little looking.

Okay, I got lucky and found images without much trouble. I made a urine splash shield for the front inside of the interior of the pedestal. I did not want to seal the pedestal to floor joint with a caulk unless necessary as caulk would make pedestal removal more difficult if I ever had a need to remove it. So I used a 24 x 24 piece od 1/16" acrylic as a splash shield around the inside front. The acrylic sheet is dropped over the opening edge side so there is no chance of urine running down the inside face and seeping out between the pedestalto floor joint. I hope that is understood okay.
7 foot deep 3 x 3 foot pit. It'll take a while to fill. I had to build a new privy after the fire came through a few years ago. This is not as deluxe as the one that burned but I was in a hurry this time. I used the old pit to dispose of burnt debris as fill material, plus a little soil on top, so this one is all new.

Wood seat, well varnished or painted, top it with a modern plastic seat if you must. I've been sitting on the traditional board seat (without modern plastic seat) for all of my 65 years, shared with up to six other families, never an issue (except when somebody's little boy "misses", but that's a whole 'nother issue). Nobody ever "caught anything" from the seat.
