I'm adding on to my deck and re-doing my current deck. I will have 2 sets of stairs and a ramp I'm looking to make slip resistant. I've tried the traction strips that stick to the wood but it doesn't last.

Wondering if adding sand to wood stain would work as it does with paint?

Thanks,
Jim

I’ve got a couple of steps with asphalt shingles nailed to them. Doesn’t look the greatest but works just as well as the strips that you buy and are cheaper.

I doubt it would work with stain, since the stain is penetrative rather than a coating. Another possible alternative is using skateboard tape. May be a similar problem to your traction strips (i.e., may not stick well) but the stuff itself is pretty wear-resistant. I've used it on metal surfaces and it is good for many years there.

I use Lee Valley high friction tape on all of my ramps and stair treads. I scuff the wood lightly before applying and have even stained over them. You could always tack the ends down with a staple gun or roofing nails. Marine carpet glue could help too.

They make a deck coating that you can add sand into, it dries with a no skid finish.
