So I'm purchasing a pre-cut kit of a post and beam 10x16 cabin from Jamaica Cottage shop here in Vermont.
The package I'm picking up is around 5,500 pounds, 16'x3.5'x3'.
I think they set the package on a pallet, and they will handle loading it on the truck or trailer at the facility. I was thinking of renting a 20' truck from uhaul with an enclosed 16'10" bed. I have a neighbor with a tractor with a fork attachment but the fork only looks to be like 4-5' long, since the package is 16' I don't see how we would lift the back end out. Any Ideas would be appreciated.

It's worth mentioning the company offers free shipping, I save $400 by picking it up myself, however I'm not handling the shipping to save money, it's about the time I'd have to wait to get it dropped off. Mid to late September at the earliest and It's ready for pickup in 11 days from now.

Thanks again.

Haul it on an open deck trailer. Get site prepped, drop it off, cover it and get to work before the snow flies.

the less you have to handle it by hand the better. loading it into an enclosed truck or trailer then unloading it will be a pain. If you have a truck get a flatbed trailer, tandem axle, and haul it on that. You will you find lots of uses for a trailer if you buy one

Open deck trailer or flatbed truck. As was mentioned all the extra handling if using a box truck will be a pita.

Make sure your neighbors tractor with loader can handle a 5500lb load. I would expect the forks are not rated for that much. You can unload by hand though.

Do like they did to move the block in old days.

The tractor can lift 1 end ( more than likely), put round log under it, lower back down on log. Start pulling it out. Then another log when room to put under it and so on...

This will give you the idea:

Heck, if you were in WA, I'd loan you my 18 foot flatbed car/tractor hauler trailer.

Another option could be to rent the box truck and get it to the location. Then call a flat bead tow truck to pull it out of the box truck and set it on the ground.

Off loading that package by hand would not be very hard. The advantage to hand off loading is that you can inspect your load. A few messed up boards or any of the many pieces that can and will slow down your project. And being able visualize your project in your mind and matching it up with the job is beneficial and time well spent.
Stacking the materials for your cabin so that they correlate with the construction phase so you minimize handling. The first time someone starts digging around trying to find the right board and you will have lumber scattered. I made up saw horses to stack my package on. That kept it high and dry and I didn’t have to bend over. You will find out that as you are sighting down boards for straightness that your package will still get shuffled somewhat.
If you have volunteer help it is also very helpful. And now I have lots of saw horses around. And I found that having a good sturdy platform to work off of is working smarter.
Guess I let you know a bit of how I think you would be time well spent if you have a plan or can maybe help visualize your cabin. Have a great time building your memories.

Get a flatbed trailer. See if they can package it such that you don't have to lift the entire load at once.
