Hi everyone, my name is Alex. Long time lurker here, from Ontario Canada.

I have been following this site for the last year when our family bought an off-grid cabin in Kearney, Ontario.

It has been quite a journey to date, as the property was owned by a hoarder for the last 30 years.

To date, we have removed over 57,000lbs of garbage from the site. That is not including the 83 tires that I was able to recycle, countless pounds of recyclable metal and thousands of pounds of wood that I have burnt. I would be lying if I did not say there have been times that I have doubted the purchase, working through a sea of garbage.

That being said, when the day comes to end, relaxing by the lake with this view, always keeps me going for another day!

I look forward to learning from the wealth of knowledge on this site and as time goes on, I hope to contribute.

welcome to the site and congrats on the purchase. Love that area and your picture shows why.

That is a lot of stuff to remove. I thought I had a lot to deal with but you have me beat.

That's a great panorama view! Cleaning up a hoarding mess is something else. We had to do it when my great uncle passed. I feel your pain.

I am sure the locals appreciate what you are doing for the neighborhood. I cant imagine a hoard by a lake. I have watched that show hoarding and I see guys who have so much garbage inside their home, the guy was sleeping outside. I dont mean valuable stuff, I mean actual trash. So he kept his trash inside till he had to sleep outside. It makes no sense.

Congrats on purchase, welcome to forum.

I know what you mean about garbage.
After all the clearing, we found absolutely nothing of value.
Real shame how many family pictures, etc that were thrown away, I just had no-one to give them to.
It was a real shame what damage can be done to a place. We are gutting the place down to the studs.
Here is a couple of pictures of some of the work we did last year. This job took almost a week and filled a 40 yard dumpster!

Welcome! And good job on the tremendous amount of garbage and recycling you've gotten through. That view is absolutely worth it! We had (and still have) stuff to get rid of, but nothing like that, 57,000lbs is just shy of 4 and a half African elephants

Welcome Alex. Kearney is a beautiful spot. I looked for a cabin there for a while before I found my place in Ontario (near Georgian Bay).

We are 4 years into our clean up and rebuild. We bought ours from borderline hoarders, but nothing to extent that you are dealing with. I actually think it was beneficial to us because we could afford something that we wouldn't have been able to otherwise. Most other people couldn't see past the junk or were unwilling to tackle the huge clean up job.

I'm sure that you will continue to question why you did this to yourself many times before you get over the hump. I know that I spent a lot of nights staring the amount of work ahead of me, but I love it more each trip. Totally worth the effort. Good luck.
