I am looking for people who are in Central New York who might know people who can help me find resources for my cabin. My skills with building are kind of limited so I am going to have to hire people to help me.

My cabin is approx. 30 miles south of Ithaca in Tioga County. Although I do not live there, I have a cousin, a contractor who lives in Lansing and does a lot of work at Cornell University. Depending on your location and scope of work involved, he may be willing to assist. Where are you/your property located?

Google is your friend. Ask the neighbors. Stop at the local diner, deli, hardware store etc and ask them. I found a great Amish builder that way.

I live in the area although my cabin is not. There is a huge Amish presence in the CNY/Finger Lakes region. You may not find them advertising but with a little investigation you'll have no problem finding someone.
I've used their services. They are very good craftsmen, resonable and reliable.

Quoting: bobrok There is a huge Amish presence in the CNY/Finger Lakes region. Yes. Just down the road from my cabin is an Amish family. I just drove in and introduced myself and it turns out he makes railings and furniture and can help me with some of the stuff. I know a lot of the Amish people because I used to have a draft horse and worked with mutual trainers. Thanks for confirming this!

I'm in prattsburgh south of Keuka. I tried FB to ask about Amish builders n got an earful from people saying why use them? that's taking money out of our economy etc etc. One guy msg me n said he could give me a free estimate. I thought...ok..He never showed up. I'll stick with Amish.. PLUS.. they already live off grid lifestyle with generations of experience, work hard and dependable.

I agree with Deercula. Ask all the cracker barrel hangouts around. My best source of information is our country butcher. His meat is the best and all the locals go to him. He's an excellent source of information. Local lumberyard is also a good source.
I had the Amish build me things. it was a rough start before I knew how to make connections. How do you find an Amish builder? They aren't in yellow pages or on the web. So I drove around and tried to talk to them. Well they spoke to me in German. Want to screw them up, speak German back. After things relaxed a bit I found they all work through agents.
They call us English which is code for outsider. The agents are all English. They handle obtaining supplies, own the electric tools and deliver supplies and drive them around if needed. Amish can't own electric tools but they can use them. At least that's how it works by me.
There's plenty of work I would never have my local Amish do. Electrical, plumbing, foundation and finish work but they do a great job with board and batten. Your results may vary.
Live in Rochester and cabin is by Swain. Finger Lakes have always been my playground. Wineries have really taken off. Where there use to be maybe ten around a lake there's now close to a hundred. Climate is very Germanic so they can produce world class wines of that class. The others they make and sell, not so much but that for the tourist off a bus that want a pinot noir. Not something they can do a good job with.
