Dear Gentle Cabin Souls: As I have mentioned elsewhere, I have just purchased small piece of land with a 16 x 28 log cabin on it and plan to use it as a writer's retreat, retreat, escape from life. The cabin, of course, has little storage and I am trying to figure out nice design ideas to add bookshelves/shelves above the windows as I have seen in a few places. Does anyone here have pictures of their cabin interiors showing unique shelving ideas? The cabin has a loft with steep walls and no square sides, so adding anything upstairs is kind of out. I would appreciate any visual advice people can give.

Wow. Those are just beautiful and exactly what I am looking for. How do you attach them? Just nail them on to the window ledge?

You can screw them in at an angle if you pre drill a pilot hole. You can also hide a smaller bracket on the ones up high. That will help make them stronger, and prevent them from pulling away from the wall. I am making a smaller thinner version to use as an actual window sill.

Here's some different brackets. You can put them on top or below the shelves. Small brackets

Add a cantilever board to the top of the shelf with those brackets if its going to carry weight. Poplar boards are very stable and stain/seal well.

Unfortunately I do not have a picture with me but if you use a live edge shelf and you need the support, we have a few live edge shelves the we used tree branches to support it. It ties in nicely with the shelf. A hole was drilled in the bottom of the shelf on an angle and the branch glued in place. Then the other end was cut on the matching angle and a nail hammered through it into the wall. Just another option to think about...and free!

I have a 7 ft long Acacia board I scored from one of the local hardwood yards. It looks similar to Darz's piece. I am going to make shelves one day , but I am thinking of doing a 'floating' shelf. They are a bit more trouble to do but sure look great! Will also hold some weight if done right.....here is a video of the process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wki3wMAbtLg&list=PLkDE81lePUzW7wi1OkPCl49fWan9ULKnk&t =0s&index=2

Here's one of the shelf sets in my cabin. Just basic pine boards, the supports are mountain laurel, all stained to match the walls. Sorry for the crappy pictures, all I have... the yellowish picture is in better focus but the reddish picture is closer to the true colors. IMG_20140112_162100_.jpg

Very nice!
I’ve noticed a variety of shelves built over doorways and windows in different photos of JP Morgan’s “great campâ€: Camp Uncas
Zoom in on some of these: https://www.6sqft.com/j-p-morgans-120-year-old-great-camp-uncas-in-the-adirondacks-fi nally-sells-after-a-price-cut/#

At our cabin I recycled yellowed maple shaker style cupboards on our amber shellacked knotty pine walls. Thd cabinets went under and on either side of our fairly wide but short kitchen window.
The gap between the upper cabinets looked really unfinished, so I looked through hundreds, maybe thousands of pics on line for a valence idea that might work with our interior. Out of all those I only found a couple ideas.
However I had a up reclaimed pine log fireplace mantel that I couldn’t use until I realized that I could put it over the kitchen window. It actually looks great and in keeping with the knotty pine walls and yellowed maple shaker style cabinet faces.

Thank you for such a helpful post. Those over the door shelves are just what I have in mind. I would love to see your photos.
