I like: Driftwood Valley by Theodora Stanwell-Fletcher; Two in the Far North by Margaret Murie; A Place in the Woods, Helen Hoover (a series); We Took to the Woods, Louise Dickinson Rich (a series); Indian Creek Chronicles, Peter Fromm; Lonely Land, Sigurd F. Olson; Roots in the Rock, Charles Child (brother of Julia Child, who figures in his story of building a cabin in Maine); Hawk's Rest, Gary Ferguson (set in Yellowstone); On the Wild Edge, David Petersen (set in Colo.).

Based on the recommendations in this thread, I just read Bijaboji, North to Alaska by Oar, and really enjoyed it. I just learned that the author, Betty Lowman Carey died only a month ago, on March 16, at age 96. She and her husband later built a remote cabin and he wrote a book about it, Puffin Cove, which I haven't read yet.

One of my favorites is Alone in the Wilderness about Dick Proenneke.

Amen! Dick was an amazing man. The filming he did of his project is an amazing companion to the book.

Another classic (out of print but you can order a cheap used copy from Amazon.com) is The Wilderness Cabin by Calvin Rutstrum.

Besides including some old-time designs and tips on chimneys, the book discusses the wilderness cabin as an enduring American symbol, and the necessity of having a wilderness getaway as a jumping off point to even deeper wilderness.

The author has written many other related books including, The Wilderness Life.

My cabin looks like his simplest design, which is also like Dick Proenneke's design in Alone in the Wilderness.

Not to rub it in your face but after hearing about Crusoe of Lonesome Lake from this post I got on ebay and bought a nice 1957 copy with the dust jacket for $9.

I just ordered a 1957 hardcover, it was $14.57, but there were others for $44.

I read "My Side of the Mountain" to my girls over the last couple months (we left the book at the cabin) and my girls loved it. We ordered the Disney movie (1969) and it arrived, but we waited until done reading the book, then watched the movie (on a laptop). It was really fun cabin activity drawn out over a few months. I hadn't seen the movie myself since I was 9 years old. I never forgot that movie, it had a big effect on me, culminating, I think, in cabin lust. It was great fun to see it again with my girls, who are that age. The book was better than the movie, of course.

This is a GREAT thread! 2nd on Dick Proenneke effect.

I have to put in an order to amazon soon! Too many good stories to miss...summer reading is coming up!!
Just finished "The Dangerous River" Adventures On The Nahanni - RM Patterson. CDN edition 1966 - Cabin life and river exploring down the
Nahanni river and Northwest territories.
When I finished the book...it was like saying goodbye to an old friend.
Thanks for the ideas folks...I'm going to start cruising Amazon for deals!

My favorite book about cabins is One Man's Wilderness AN ALASKA ODESSEY by Richard Proenneke. He went to Alaska in the early 70's and built a cabin and lived off the land. He photogaphed it and filmed it. The film can bee seen on PBS stations. I was fortunate to live off the land in the wilds of Alaska for a while for a sociological experiment that aired on the Discovery Channel. I went to Alaska with my 2 daughters in the fall of 2007 and lived off the land with basic provisions just as Dick Proenneke did some 30 years prior. The name of the show is The Alaska Experiment and can be seen quite often on Planet Green network

Just finished "Crusoe of Lonesome Lake". I read it in 4 sessions- the book is too short. It would have been a treat to meet Ralph Edwards. Thanks Bushbunkie, l just watched that 49 minutes Youtube about Edwards and his daughter Trudy (filmed 1988). Search Youtube for "Crusoe of Lonesome Lake". A sad note that it all burned in a huge forest fire in 2004, there is absolutely nothing left of Ralphs or Trudys 160 acre homesteads. http://saltspringnews.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=10478

More cabin/pioneer books please!

I have seen that many times and is just great. That is something special that you did in Alaska and would love to do something like that.
