I posted a while back about my new Stihl not oiling the bar. I tore the thing apart, cleaned the Oiler and it worked fine for all but 15 minutes. This thing has been a PITA since I purchased it. I'm using Husqvarna's bar oil. For kicks and giggles I used 10w-50 and that seemed to do the trick. Bar is this going to wear out the motor and/chain/bar?

Has nothing to do with the moter ! its much better than no oil,but it may leak oil in storage ,I have used engine oil many times in a pinch .

Problem with motor oil is it doesn't stick to the bar very well. If you're a a high mileage user, you will wear the bar and chain out a lot quicker.

Have you tried opening up the oiler adjustment to see if it will keep oiling? Somewhere between a lot and too much may help.

Agreed. Bar oil is designed with a thicker viscosity, to stick the bar more than motor oil will.

Unfortunately on this model, there isn't an adjustment for the Oiler

Mix bar oil and old engine oil. Bar oil helps stick. Motor oil helps use it up ?

Maybe check with sthil dealer,or on a forestry site online. find it strange that there is no adjustment , on oiler, but possibly not. May be some dirt or a bit of sawdust, blocking the tube from oil tank to the bar. Or sawdust in your oil tank. Tear it apart again and blow every thing out clean. I tried some used motor oil , once, won't do it again. old 243

You didn't mention , the model number of the saw. Perhaps that would help. I was looking to get a smaller saw , a couple of years ago. Have always had stihl's, was not impressed , at the amount of plastic parts in the present models, I purchased an echo saw, I don't do as much sawing , as I used to. But like the saw , so far so good, there is also a dealer close by.good luck old243

From what I have found, the 250 does not have an adjustable oiler. I was unable to locate anything specifically about the 251. But, I would imagine they are similar?
Either way, I am actually surprised. I would have thought a saw such as a Stihl, would have that feature on most all of their saws.

When I was researching saws to buy, the Stihl model I was looking at had a lot of reviews complaining about the oiler and not putting enough on. There were enough complaints about it that made me think it was a common problem with the Stihl. For that reason I went with the Echo.
