Well got my lake side throne completed. Saves the walk up the hill to the other. And was broken in by two citified women (I would consider even most on this site to citified - LOL!) and then enjoyed the experience. It is a 5 gal pail composter so don't worry about the lake!

Here is my sawdust toilet outhouse I just put up on my property. We built and painted it in my driveway, took it apart in six pieces to haul up and carry up the trail, then re-assembled it. We re-used the old toilet seat box we had been using over a hole in the ground, and the bucket fits under it nicely.
I put a clear PVC roof on it for plenty of light. It was a fun project for the family.

We built our outhouse mostly out of recycled parts. Someoneâ€™s old deck. Wooden shipping crates. Pallets. An old pot. Tea kettle. Various parts from habitat.

It has solor lighting. Plastic roofing panels for daytime light. Bucket system composting toilet with a separator bowl that feeds to a French drain. Sink is powered by a foot ball pump and waste water from it rinses out the pee drain when you wash your hands. Solar powered exhaust fan feeds from the toilet compartment to an exhaust stack outside and up to the roof where is it mesh shielded. It was finished with a coat of paint and someoneâ€™s left over bamboo flooring.

This set up has provided a smell proof experience. Once the heavy door is closed the insulated walls and residential touches make you feel like your in a home. Not a free standing structure.

I use a toilet seat made from an old insulite camping pad and a flannel shirt from the second hand store. If you hang it up so that frost or snow doesn't settle on it you don't have to bring it back and forth from the cabin and it feels just fine when you sit on it even in the winter.

Good idea, I cut one out of blue styrofoam insulation and it truly feels like its heated as soon as you sit down, even on the coldest of days. I heard about that trick decades ago, but never did it until a few years ago and kicked myself for taking so long to do it.

Just trace a hole with a toilet seat on to the foam, cut out and then round the edges with course sandpaper. Simple job and works great
