I've had two security/game cameras stolen. I suspect the thief is "shinnying" up the tree. I access the cameras via a ladder. Will a few sharpened finishing nails pointed down do the job? If my trees were larger girth this wouldn't be a problem, just don't wanna have to wait for the trees to grow.

What about putting up a couple of "dummy cameras" and then placing another camera in a well hid area to catch the thief?

Be cool to have a tracking device in these cameras like phones or iPads.

Tar, glue or grease on tree.
Barb wire wrap.
Hand grenade with pin wired to camera.

They look high for cameras, put one down low.

I like the greasy tree idea... Now to keep my kids off it. I'm not confident of my camera hiding abilities, esp down low and minimal work to steal.

Put a sign up about halfway down the driveway.
Thanks For Stopping In You’ve Been Photographed At Least 2 Times You Won’t Find Them All
Works surprisingly well at my place.

Since I have cameras, I don't want to warn folks with a camera sign as they can easily don a face mask, hoodie/sunglasses. I'd rather have a clear picture and potential element of surprise. Also, sign on driveway might just reroute them through the woods, which increases the amount of real estate to cover and cameras needed, let alone my effort in checking them all.
I have an alarm sign in front of my off-grid cabin and alarm stickers on the windows. Burglar must have thought I was bluffing as security signs often do. Burglar broke window, entered, set off alarm, and left without taking anything. Sign was not a deterrent. The alarm was. I had to replace a window, though.

Could always hang a skeleton from a tree with a sign around it's neck that says "Retired Trespasser" but that might upset a few tender fluffies & it may generate more laughter from the rest....
Maybe a hidden cam near your entry / driveway that could catch the vehicle & plate, judges do love photo's.

If you do this you need another camera to film the antics when he hits the grease.

Yes, put up another camera to watch the first camera, and another to watch the camera watching the first. And so on.
Actually, are there any really fake looking fake cameras that you could put a real camera in?

OK, obviously my humorous thought flew on past...
A Dummy Cam is a good idea and if you could get a Hornet's Nest (even a dummy) up there it would most certainly act as a deterrent, mind you, better if there were angry hornets in it and filming that would be precious no doubt. Thieves deserve absolutely NO QUARTER in my opinion and they deserve whatever they get into.
Another possibility, if there a nearby branch that could be put under tension with a small thin wire and have that attached to the Cam with a "chock" so as he releases the Cam, the branch comes down and gives him a good wallop up side of the head ?
Not knowing what kind of connectivity you have out there, I might also suggest one of those "Connected Cams" which can send images to the Internet, there are a variety of them with various features & functions and of course price points... but if the twit is climbing the tree and stealing it, you'll have photo's on the web for his attempt and by the time he realizes he's been nailed it'll be too late.

Seems that by themselves these cams just don’t work as security devices - especially if the are getting stolen for their own obvious value.
So we really do need to be able to buy games that look real and fakes that look fake and as mentioned above, fakes that attract nasty stinging insects. Maybe fakes that spill smelly goop on people when pulled off trees, etc.
Basically, distract, confuse, tire out would-be thieves.

Get the game camera made by Moultrie that had a modem and sends you pictures. Stealing the camera, its too late, photos already sent.

Sounds like something that’s possibly even more attractive go thieves - those thieves returning wearing scarves and hats.

I have 2 cellular cameras....Spy point, they are pricey and you can subscribe to a monthly plan. The pics are sent immediately to my phone and there is a tamper alarm, plus if the cameras are taken the next time they are used the camera will send gps coordinates. I have one camera inside/10 monthly plan and one outside 20 monthly plan....The thieves around here only break in during the winter and usually during a storm. They case places where the roads in are not plowed by owners. They will go in smash a window and leave, come back a day or two later to look for signs of activity , if there are none they go in and have a hay day....The police are 10 min away. I'm still debating on posting warnings signs....

I keep mine rigged with C4. An arm for a camera, seems fair...
