Hey, I recently acquired a cabin on Vancouver Island up near a ski hill. It needs work, as it is was sitting on original footings and posts. These were a mix of rocks for footings and trees or stumps as posts. It has been on these footings for almost 50 years. I am now upgrading all the footings and then will move onto the rest of the cabin updates.

Will be adding a new deck, where the one at the back was torn down, composting toilet has been installed, new cedar shake siding for the gable ends, and a new end beam for the back side. I will post more pics as I get work done, but I'm a weekend warrior so its a slow process. Just wanted to say Hi as I am new to the forum and let you see my progress. I have already used many of your threads for gathering data before I started the project.

Nice work on that stout foundation supports. The key to a good cabin and a long lived one is a great foundation. One area one needs not cheap out on for sure.

Look great!

Thanks everyone. I managed a couple more days up there this weekend, installed 3 more posts and added PT 2x6 the length of the cabins 3 main beams. The original lumber was good, but the end couple feet were rotten and I extended the deck out. Here's a few more picks, including the new 20 ft. beam going in next weekend to replace the rotten end section you see.

Nice! The A-frame has lots of character. Love the idea of shake siding on the ends. Anxious to see it

What a couple days...Got the last three footings poured, after a day of building a false beam to support the end of the cabin and building the forms. Then managed to get the rotten sections out and installed the new 20ft beam to replace that. Not fun as the beam has cupped 1.5". Here are some pics of the work.

And here is one of the beam on its way up, and then in place and the local swimming hole..
Next time up, will be putting in the 8x8 main post on the corner and the center beams, and the last deck post. Then onto the deck, and starting the finishing work, as well as insulating the underside.
As you can see in the one picture, the one foundation point is a very large stump, it will stay till next year, then replace that as well.

Spent a couple more days up there. Got all the footings and posts in, so the foundation work is done. Then we got onto to deck rebuild. Half the battle was getting the flashing and tar paper all correct on the ledger board, and ensuring water and run off was done right. The previous deck there had been collecting more water than diverting...Anyway here are some pics.

Had a good weekend up at the cabin with friends helping with labor (the best kind). Got a new "to me" wood stove installed, that can pass insurance inspection, my electrician buddy added a couple power outlets and lights and switches, and insulated the whole underside of the cabin with Roxol and then used old roofing metal to seal up the underside from rodent. It was a productive weekend.

Rebuilt the deck, completed flashing and put in hand rails. Almost ready for winter.
