I told Hubby we should put up a sign saying "Bruno Security" and then scatter bear scat all around (heaven knows there is enough of it at our camp). In the end, we just put a gate up (wrapped it in fluorescent tape so it is easily seen) and have some old signs up from the previous prospector that say Warning - Test Holes in Area. The only "visitor" we've had is the mining inspector - grrrrr.

Thinking we are going to use a wireless Internet like Verizon and hook up to swann security system... Set up right it will send email with pics as soon as camera is activated with pic... That way you have pic even if system is stolen or destroyed.... This will allow me to also look in at any time to see what's going on around area... Just my 2 thoughts...

I don't have reliable cell service at my cabin so I installed Exede satellite internet service at my property and Foscam IP cameras ($79 on Amazon) in and outside my cabin. It's dead simple to configure it to email me pics when the camera detects motion. If I ever get an email of intruder(s), I'll forward it to the local police while I make the 1.5 hour drive to the cabin.

At the end of the day.
If your cabin is remote, no close "or resident" neighbours with even a gate...at the end of the lane...anyone that happens to feel adventureous and wanders on to your site, will look in your cabin.
Its just human nature.
And I suggest, its better that it is locked up and leave one window not covered. That looks in on nothing of value or need, like a chair or wood or bucket...
Use common sense and remove any valuable, equipment or food/booze.
Warning sign(s) need to be posted, for legal due diligence, regarding any hazards/accidents that maybe or occur on your property.
Make sure lane/road entrances and waterfront access point, has a no trespassing sign/and a sign that includes no hunting, fishing or trapping. "User enters on own risk!"
Yes, it is private property and they shpuld not be there. But, if they fall in a hole at dusk, on your property, and want to sue you, you have done your due diligence in warning them and marking the hole.
Take pictures of the signs and any extra markings you have done!
This is all evidence if something happens..
AND definitely NO "traps" of any kind! You could be charged if something terrible happens to anyone you "intentionally" or unintentionally injure - and it could be someone you know!
This is not America. Or the wild west. Though in the rural country one wonders some days..
Even they would not wish an accident to happen to a neighbours or dog walking neighbours sudden evening visit.
Just a good SOLID reinforced door, lock AND deadbolt - is all you can really do.
Some neighbours "kids" from across the lake, (a small remote lake) who obviously had had poor parented skills, came on our property from the water...and both remove the tent trailer support poles from our old trailer, and through them in the lake along with breaking in a stealing some booze.
I immediately; invited myself over to these so called parents of 20 something "kids", with to much time, and an attitude, they owned the lake.
... and told the parents, "by the way..I just want to tell ALL owners on our lake..."last weekend" someone broke into our tent trailer, damaged this and that...and we immediately called the police, and informed everyone on the lake...including the police of this incident...whom recorded the location etc.
The police informed us (sort of....) that they will be patrolling the ABC lake road, that (these parents) cottage lake road is on, alot more, and, that they suspect it was "young adults", that were at the lake last week, that have done this.
Well, you should have seen the face on the mother!
First; she knew her kids friends were up last week, on there own. But, did not reveal that to me...
And, I know, that these parents and there kids, are "partiers", and also have come accustom to thinking they are the only ones on the lake, so they can "act" however they want.
And I know, they had looked at our property, before they bought theirs and wanted ours, including hang around it with their "group" of party friends, in winter trip in, liked they owned it.
But, I think NOW we through a wet blanket on their "party".
Not only for the fact that in their head now (the police) will be around more, so they better watch what they think they get away with...but, a "reality check" that they are not the only people here and the need to have some respect/rules for any of their guests or family too!
I also followed up with a noticably NEW "large sign" on the property line..at the front entrance of the bay, that they need to pass, to get into "our" bay - that states absolutely... "private property".
To remind them, it is ours to enjoy respectively, and no one is allowed to be there. No one.
We also told their kids outright to be quiet, in our Bay, if their kids get loud. I am sure this message gets back to the parents...
Our message was simply everyone on the lake knows what is expected and happens.. - very clear.
They have settled down, and stayed on their property.
And I am sure now they are well aware they need to keep us happy..
- and if they don't want the police called, which may lead to other infractions, they are certainly doing over there when they "party"... they better keep it quiet and close to home!

Our cabin has essentially no services except for power. We don't have a phone line or internet connection and aren't interested in monthly bills for a rarely used service. I've put in one of these Moultrie Cameras to cover the off season - http://www.absoluteautomation.com/brands/Moultrie.htmlhttp://www.absoluteautomation.c om/brands/Moultrie.html -
This combined with some warning signs, "Property Under Surveillance" which seem to keep them away to begin with let me rest easy.

Quoting: BaconCreek I had a gargoyle by my entrance gate but someone stole it. Bad Karma from that I bet. oh this is killing me with laughter. i am thinking of putting this mosaic head i made in the window of our cabin...to look like at first glance someone is there peeking out the window.if anything it should scare the dickens out of whom ever. we had our generator wagon stolen.our fault-we left it out.then the poops came into the mobile home and stole our woodstove and pipes and connecters.so last thing we did was put a gate across our drive.we are really interested to see if this keeps poops out.

That is actually a very good idea. At first glance if they think they see someone in the window they will leave quickly I'm sure. Another thing we do sometimes at our camp is I hang old towels, etc. on the clothesline so it looks like someone is there.

hattie.i am gonna try your idea of the clothes line.also...wonder if there was some dollar store grave stones set up in a little area like a cemetary up front near our drive would sort of spook some away. the deep snow and no plowing roads keeps theives away in winter.once we live there.this wont be such a problem.

when I bought my place I put up a grease gun on the wall of one of the old fellow's (previous owner) sheds. "my first tool moved to the new place" I told the friend helping me move. two days later it was gone. i started to notice stuff was moving around. then i found the old fellow's notes about his purchases. he kept a list of what he'd bought and when it had been stolen. He lost 3 chainsaws. can you imagine. one he kept for just two weeks! so I started asking around. turns out its my next door neighbor. he's a "market gardener." a perfect excuse to drive a van with all the interior pulled out. well. after a few more "disappearances" had a nice chat with the local constabulary. and one day in a rather bad mood had a chat with the neighbor. let's just say I used a raised voice. put up "no trespassing signs". and i cheerfully badmouth him to anyone who will listen. it's been two years with no problems. i wave at the neighbor when I see him, but for some reason he doesn't want to talk to me anymore. *** talking to a guy I know who might have had a "market gardener" period.. these guys know what cameras are and they use them to track your behaviour. check your lane way/entrance for cameras. guess the problem is the thieves have a better reason for having the latest tech than we do.

What We do at the cabin is this... Double lock all doors, lock windows, and pull all blinds down. That's it, no deterrent. I have helped the one neighbor, my wife and I have, when she got stuck in the snow awhile ago. Her husband has also loaned me battery cables one time. We introduced ourselves and let them know where we're from, that we are happy to be there, etc.
Knock on wood we've had no problems but we are in a lower crime area. I did set up my game camera facing the front door/some of the drive for over a week and a half, and nobody came by. Phew.
Piece of mind is nice IMO. We have good insurance and everything we own we've taken pictures of and documented, and then sent to our insurance agent for our file.... So go ahead and break in and steal our second hand stuff it'll be replaced, is our attitude, after worrying about break-ins/damage for more than a year now...
My advice would be to make a point to not bother, but say hi and shoot the shi* with your neighbors if possible. Usually country folk like to watch out for each other and help when they can we've learned and we try to return the favor. Exchange phone numbers and offer beer/water or whatever.
And for those of you that have had a bad experience we are sorry. We have worried about that for a long time and have been lucky, for now...

We have signs and a neighbor that keeps an eye out for us. We never lock the doors or windows, would much rather deal with theft than theft and damage.

I'm going to look at property in Upstate NY in a few weeks for summer retirement residence. I was thinking about this subject and looked it up here- now I'm up in the middle of the night it took so long to read the entire thread. I have two properties I'm interested in; one acre with a neighbor that lives year round about 400 feet away, or a 4 acre waterfront, beautiful old woods spot surrounded by paper company land but only accessible by canoe and nobody around except by the water, possibly. Both are about the same price. I really want to be able to fish where I live, but the place with the neighbor is sounding better after reading all of this. Wish I could afford both!

Hey Santeec, where's that 4 acres again? one of the things that really helped me was going and meeting all the neighbors. when my problems first started my good neighbor started walking her dog along our property line every day. I really appreciated that.

As Mountain Don coveys with experience, if anyone protects their property with force, or intended or potential harm...due diligence will not be a legal defense.
Any damage of injury to the suggested perpetrator, if caught, and/or claims / sues you..for injury/medial or otherwise.
You will be interviewed by both police, lawyers and judges. And if injuries result will be serious for you both financially and legally.
Your not the law. Just use common sense.

Copied from another thread:
HOW TO INSTALL A REDNECK HOME SECURITY SYSTEM
1. Go to the Goodwill and buy a pair of size 14-16 men's work boots. 2. Place them on your front porch, along with a copy of Guns and Ammo Magazine. 3. put four giant dog dishes next to the boots and magazines. 4. Leave a scribbled note on the door that reads...
Bubba, Me and Marcel, Donnie Ray and Jimmy Earl went for more ammo and beer. Back in an hour. Don't mess with the pit bulls. They got the mailman this morning and messed him up bad. I don't think Killer took part, but it was hard to tell from all the blood. Anyway, I locked all four of 'em in the house. Better wait outside. Be right back, Cletus

I just thought that I would share my idea for a door frame reinforcement that I came up with and installed on our little building recently. Other than buying a couple of lag bolts, it didn't even cost me anything since I had the piece of angle iron lying around in my shop.
The door frame is usually the first piece to give when someone kicks or bumps the door with their hip to knock the door in. Next would be the door itself splitting. I have a couple of ideas to help with that to, although I have not installed that yet.
BTW I don't pretend to think that I can keep a determined burglar out, I just want them to have to work a little harder to get in.

We leave our cabin unlocked. Have a locked gate at the road, but I would rather someone walk in rather than break in.

I left the cabin unlocked for a while, but things kept disappearing. I've also read many articles of remote cabins like mine being used as meth labs which leaves them as Haz Mat sites. Don't know what it would cost to properly clean up, but it is probably more than a wrecked door/frame. It is a risk balance, but I've started locking up and have added game cameras. Cameras missed a recent bike theft, however, as thieves didn't use what I thought was most likely access. I've since redeployed. (I wish I could use my game cameras for game!)

Yeah I know that many subscribe to the same line of thought but I have seen far too many unlocked vehicles and homes stolen from to go that route.

I have not yet built anything on my piece of NY land. But some of the neighbors like to have a Chain/Gate across their driveway. I had hired a contractor to some cleanup, i asked him about this. He indicated that if a chain is up, a theif knows you are not there, but if left open they may just pass by and go to the one with the locked gate or chain...
