Hi TMT, that looks like an interesting unit. But $989 and $480/year, and waving a big white "shoot me" flag?

My recommendation would be to get a solar system on it's own, that you can use to power the cabin. The scoutguard cameras are smaller and easier to hide, and $280, and if you "add a line" to your existing cellphone plan you might be able to get it up and running for about $10/mo or maybe you will have to add a data plan to get the pics.

Is anyone using the ScoutGuard? I am very interested in a tested solution.

I've used SG 500 and 550 cameras for a number of years. I have been pleased with bthem. They are old, no wireless/cellular.

Check here for a review on the SG580. These guys are honest as far as I've been able to tell. Interesting website deicated to game cameras.

I cant get any insurance for my place except some company way out of state at a cost of $600 a year. They like to see me withing a mile from a hydrant and power plus a phone line which I dont have any of those. I have never had an issue yet. I am in the process of fully fencing my entire 20 acres, will be done in spring. This camera gives me lots of control right from my PC. I can take a snap shot anytime, check snow depth etc. It will be very high up on a gable end of my cabin, way to high for anyone to reach, even with a tall std ladder. And it will last all year on the power source, others need battery changed or charged, even with solar panels, it just seems to extend the life. Works from -34 to +140 degrees, many cameras shudders freeze in the teens. My temps can get to zero on colder winters. Easily in the teens. I have plenty of sunshine, usually 300 days a year. I'm still researching, this so far looks to be my best option. I will paint it the same color as the cabin to blend it in.

Ended up getting the eyetrax unit, cammo one with solar cell. This thing is heavy duty, beyond HD, its military grade stuff. Top quality everything. It works well. I am still playing with it and dialing it in. I will get it installed and post a few of my snapshots in April.

I am certainly interested how it works for you. I have been looking at several systems I have just not pulled the trigger yet.

Haven't read all the posts, but I feel for you. Would love to catch scum in the act 4 sure. I have a couple inexpensive Tasco Game Cameras set up on my property to take pictures or video of anyone who is there. I have one pointed on the driveway at the road and another in another spot. I've also a sign reading "This property protected by 24hr live video security". So far it has worked, but some people just have no respect. Good luck.

I and a few others out here have put up cameras. One type is a dash camera that records in full colour at 30 or 15 frames per second . I ordered them out of Korea a few years back (150.00). The picture quality is unbelievably good. I put one inside the front grill of what looks like a old broke down car off to the side of the driveway. I hooked it up to the battery in the car. the only down side is it starts to overwrite the video at about 36hrs., but when you need to get a plate number from a distance these will do it.
Then I have a bunch of bushnell game cameras, they are ok in that the batteries last 5 month or so. picture quallity is ok up close but poor at a distance.
I would find the spot on the tree I wanted to put them in then wrap that spot with stretch wrap cellofane. Then tie the camera into place, and spray expanding foam around it. After 24 hrs I would go out with a long sharp knife, and trim the foam so the camera fit the tree perfect. A smooth transition from camera to tree. Then remove the camera from the tree, and spray everything in flat brown camo paint. Then I would put the camera back in the tree, and go around pulling pieces of bark off the tree, and ones close to it. Useing goop I would glue these pieces to the camera, foam, and strap. When done it is nearly imposible to see the cameras from any distance. I forgot, the cameras are in a metal box, so it is really not the camera, but the box the camera slides into that gets the foam, and bark, but the point is they can be made nearly invisible.
I am now ordering another kind called a plot watcher, with a zoom lens attachment. These are suposed to take a pic every 5 seconds, and record for 7 days before over writing. I like that it is always recording as the game cameras are slow to snap a pic.

Analogmanica, can you show us a pic of what the camo box/camera looks like? Also, where would I find the metal box for the camera?

Sorry to hear about all the thefts, building my shelter this summer and am worried as cabins in area get vandelized ever winter. Need to get some for driveway in as well as game. What are models/brands for the SILENT ones? I want it to be able to take a pic of licence plate or someone coming in on quad or foot and they won't hear the camera.

Also, is there a way to TURN off the flash? Would hate for someone to be driving in at night and then the flash gives it away. Thanks again, would like to set two up when I head to property on April 6th.

Well I only have one pic of one in a tree. Its from maybe 20-25 feet away. See if you can spot it, I am sure you will have to blow the pic up to see it. The box I just made myself, but they are sold as options for most game cameras where ever they are sold. They are silent, on mine the flash is with inferred leds, these are a dead give away at night, so I just put card board over them, but drilled a single hole over the one led that is used the measure if its daylight or night so it did not keep firing the flash during daylight hours shortening battery life.

(ignore pic-not relevant)

Sorry there's only one way to get members to ignore an off-topic pic of titillating machinery and that's to delete it....

I think a good place to hide a camera is in an un-earthed stump. there's lots of roots and junk to confuse the eye, and it can be placer in a fairly open area with nothing that blows around in the wind (creating motion that the camera might detect). Always remember that you have to walk up to the camera to check the pics, and in the snow, mud, sand, you will leave tracks right to the camera. So leave a way to obscure or cover your tracks.

I cant seem to post this one pic
Please check the link "Read Uploading Rules before!" under the new post text area. If image is too big, you will need to size it down first, using some software like MS Paint.
Hope this helps.

analogmanca, I just ordered a 2011 Bushnell Trophy Cam for $177 shipped. It boasts No Glow Black LED's that allegedly can't be seen by people or animals and it has a color LCD viewfinder so I can check the pics without pulling the card and having to upload to a lap top.

Not sure if it takes picture quietly. Going to try your camo method, (pieces of bark) glued to box.

Really need to hide this well so it doesn't get stolen. Hope to set it up Easter weekend. Will keep you all informed.

I have that camera (Bushnell 119467). It's going back for warranty for the 3rd time. If i could count on it, would be a nice camera. Viewfinder is not really a benefit if you have a small digital camera that you can pop the card in and look at images on a 6x bigger screen. The "flash" LEDs are truly invisible - you cannot see any flash, nothing draws attention to the camera. Not like my other bushnell which the flash LEDs glow red and say "ATTENTION -LOOK FOR A CAMERA HERE !!!!!"

My other Bushnell which was warrantee'd 3x, is now out of warranty, and it still flips out. Often has a 'fit'. taking hundreds/thousands of pics in a row (no wind, not even a leaf moving), resets its "date" to Jan 1, 2010. etc etc etc.

I'm not having good luck with Bushnells, 2 for 2.

I love the container idea, however, my land is a very remote 10 acre parcel with some extreme slopes before reaching flat areas, there is a small road large enough for a vehicle but I doubt a trailer can be dropped in the most ideal location on the property. Any ideas?

We have had theft issues for several years now and it seems like nothing is a deterrent except being here. Today our motion/sensor camera went missing. I suppose the thief came to check out what we had this year and saw the camera, and decided to take it. It's not like we have valuable items stashed here, and it's so damn annoying to battle these petty thieves! What to do???

My neighbor has a spare old pickup truck he leaves at the cabin through the 3 seasons of road access. Moves it every so often. He and we have never had any issues.

Guys-

How's this sound?

Welcome to Trout Camp and our camper!

Our insurance company mandates that we inform uninvited guests that they're trespassing and should leave immediately! However, we understand curiosity is part of being human, so have a look around...

Our 1965 Banner camper has been under the ownership of just two families since it was made. Although requiring a recent re-roof and some minor renovations that included removal of the HVAC and refrigerator, it has essentially gone unchanged since the day it rolled off the assembly line! What we enjoy most is the quality construction, look of the real wood cabinets and the old fashioned stove just like Grandma used to have in her kitchen.

We hope that you can appreciate the nostalgic qualities of its design and agree that this camper is the epitome of the saying, "They don't make 'em like that anymore!"

While the camper and its contents have little to no monetary value, it will inherently provide our family and friends with plenty of opportunities to forge fond memories spent within Pennsylvania's reflection of Heaven.

All we ask is that you securely close the door on your way out and leave the camp the way you found it.

Thank you and God Bless!

D & J

It will be left just in side the unlocked door or our camper. I visit my property on average about 3 times a month, but realize the inevitable is inevitable for a reason!

We were broke into one time in 15 yrs... We think it was a drunkin Amish neighbor that was afraid to go home one night ... Door was kicked in and the couch looked slept on... They left everything in place and even propped the door closed before they left ...

Oh yeah... Something to share about theft deterants... There is a product used on boats left in remote anchorages.. It works similar to and alarm in that if access is gained thru a window or door that is armed instead of a noise alarm a smoke bomb goes off that completely fills the interior so you cannot even see your hand in front of your face let alone see anything to steal. It is the same smoke they use in dance clubs so it has no smell!! Not sure if it would work as well in a cabin as it does on a boat??!!

I am trying that picture again. I am able to up load it now, must have had a computer glitch, So unlike windows.
Anyway, the camera is near the base of the tree, the pic is from 20-24 feet away and just cant be seen the next pic is from 7 feet away with the camera flash turned on to light up the area under the branches or else it would still be hard to see.
I have now now bought a plot watcher camera, with a wide lens, and a zoom lens. it is well build, that zoom lens has good optics and the surface is curved so it does not reflect sunlight out giving away its location. It also has more features than advertised.

I installed one of these in a shed. I liked everything about it except the quality of the 24 gauge wire that came apart when stripping the ends. I just used the 18 gauge wire for everything instead.

It's a viable solution for me because I have good neighbors and would contact me if the alarm went off.

Spypoint has a new trail camera out that uses a remote head to capture the photos. It can record pictures from upto 250' away from the camera so if the camera is stolen you still have pictures of the individual. Cabelas has them for $300.

Latest theft- Inner tube. Yes, inner tube! From a bicycle tire.

The rear wheel was locked to a post under the cabin crawlspace and rear tire deflated. Went to use bike, noticed front tire also flat. Upon inspection, the inner tube was gone. Thief replaced wheel back on bike after taking tube!

Tempted to connect party favor to bike. If moved, it'll sound like a gun going off. They'll hit their head on bottom of cabin and possibly leave some DNA evidence

I was thinking of using a car alarm system on my camp when I ever get around to getting it built. I figured it would scare the hell out of some these dumb punks around here.

I was looking at Google Earth and someone had proudly posted a photo of a cave on my property that could only have been taken by trespassing.

I made them take it down.

For years, I had people trespassing on my place to go to the cave for recreational purposes. I am grateful to the Fish and Wildlife Service and the Game and Fish for installing a gate made of 4 inch angle iron with footings buried. It is 100 yards inside the cave.

Even so, some yahoos managed to break through and get into the cave. If I had caught them in the act, they could have been charged under the Endangered Species Act because the cave is a hibernaculum for endangered bats.

No one has broken into my cabin. I did once leave a board with nails poking through it in some tall grass in the roadway to the cabin. There was ample evidence that someone had driven on it then had a bad day.
