Well, I just paid the fence guy the final installment of $5,300 to finish fencing my entire 20+ acres. Barbed wire, 4 runs, all 1 foot apart. Tucks right into the metal gate which I may wrap with extra barbed wire. They can stil walk in if they really wanted to, just not going to be easy. I'm fortunate, my driveway has no outlet and my good ful time neighbor watches anything going in. If i have buddies headed over, I let him know in advance they are coming. So far, no issues.

Had a cabin up in middle Tenn. , I made friends with a few of the neighbors, and had allowed one of them to cut hay in a field in exchange for watching over my place. Approximately 3 months ago I got a call from the ol' timer neighbor, that my cabin was on fire.
After going up and pulling all the cards from the game cameras, (5) of them. Saw that for a week a group was using my cabin to cook up meth, and after they were done, set the cabin on fire. Silent cameras, good facial ID, Tags, vehicles. One was the son of the local mayor, and a neighboring county sherrif's son. Every last one of them were arrested over the next few days. I made a copy of all the pictures and put them on 4 different CD's for the Police and Attorney
Got a letter on Friday, that they are asking for a dollar amount to rebuild my cabin and replace any furnishings I may have had in the cabin or stolen. Unsure if I wanna rebuild there or buy some land somewhere else, closer to the smokey mountains.

Bevis - That's great that you caught them, but still awful that they destroyed your place. I think I'd want to buy land someplace else. I hope these guys will get jail time.

I recently had my cabin robbed. We planned our labor day weekend months in advance for everyone to meet at the cabin. My wife's brother flew in, we had the dirt bikes loaded and all our camping gear ready for a awesome weekend. Upon arriving to the cabin I first notice an old junker car about one mile from the cabin was gone. Then we got to the cabin to hear we had been totally cleaned out. Someone after scrap metal came up to steal the cars and had taken a notice to the cabin. They broke in the back door by smashing the pad lock off the door and went through every room taking whatever they wanted. They also went through the tool shed and got pretty much everything there too. In all we had two guns stolen, about 8 storage totes of sporting goods, all our medical supplies, flashlights, 3 chainsaws, the weed eater, the lawn mower, 3 propane tanks, everything that wasn't nailed down and worth something. But they didn't take clothing, food stash, or ammo! And there was like 10 ammo boxes full. So after that happened and not having had our cabin broke into in over 15 years. These people also came back more than once, and spent all day cleaning us out. Because that truck and those cars would have taken some serious equipment. They didn't go through our gate they came totally around our cabin to the back on a logging road and cut a hole through the fence line. So what do you do? I come up with a plan to defend your unattended home or cabin. 1. Put up keep out/no trespassing signs 2. buy 2 trail cameras and keep on at the residence and the other on an avenue of approach like the driveway. 3. Use only heavy duty locks and sticks in all the windows. 4. If you live in a wooded area and think their might be another route into your property, cut down some large trees with a chain saw around the perimeter. 5. Look abandoned. Everything put away, but maintain the lawn. 6. Buy motion sensor, ear peircing alarms that makes people or animals go nuts. 7. Make a tripwire device for easy entry points around the residence. low to the ground and hard to see. 8. Have the neighbors and police do routine patrols for you.

After talking with the War Dept (wife), we are going to shop else where for property, and rebuild cabin there. Spoke with the guy that is using the property for hay about buying my property there. Now I'm glad that I put all those cameras up.

Well last week I had to go to Tn...sure wish I could say it was to stay in my cabin...But we know that wasn't going to happen. I really didn't want to go out there, because I knew it would piss me off even more. Well went to court and seems like the son of the mayor and sheriff is going to be going away for a bit. Come to find out they have been under survalience(sp?) and trying to catch both of them for a while, and the others that were involved, turned on them. Mr mayor is in hot water also over trying to bribe me. Well I did go out to my cabin site, just to take a look and walk around the site. While out there, and deputy pulls in and says he saw the gate open and tire tracks leading in and wanted to check on the place. seems they are patrolling the area a bit more now. Spoke to my neighbor about buying my place, but he said as much as he wanted to, he thought I should think it over for a bit more before making that final decision to sale. He said that he knew my emotions were playing a part with the trial happening and all. So I thought I'd update all on the outcome of my fiasco at the cabin.

Theives suck!
And I don't know the area you are in but really they can be anywhere.
You are lucky you have a neighbor that can keep a watch out.... even though it was too late.... Makes me want to do a container cabin just to keep the theives and the mice out! I just can't figure out the aesthetics. Good luck with whatever you choose!

I'm glad those guys will be doing some time for this. Thanks for keeping us updated. Maybe now that the police are doing patrols of the area you might change your mind about selling? Let us know what you decide to do.

Agreed, its probably the safest place around. Kinda like the ecoli outbreak at Jack in the Box, after that, you know it was the cleanest place to eat.

Sigh... Second incident this year, this time merely a lame break-in attempt. They pry-barred the back door, but were unable to force the door (thanks to 2 x 6 door bar). They did damage the steel door's wooden core which I had to reglue. The kicked the door in several spots. They somehow (thankfully) bypassed the windows, which would have been a more expensive repair. I checked all around the cabin, nothing was stolen.
Any game camera multi-packs on sale? Pry bar marks

Wow, Bevis. What a nightmare. Glad they caught the scumbags.
I hate thieves worse than most.
I had commented on an earlier thread about not really locking up too tightly at our place. Not much I can do but let them in easily. I can replace most anything, just not my sense of privacy.
Re: the shotgun booby trap, I think you would go down for that one. A friend has a couple bear spray booby traps in case of a break in. However, that will wear off and they are going to be pissed when it does...

I wish there was a camera with all the components remoted. Remote lens, remote motion sensor, remote, black ops illuminator. So you could hide them better.
Wireless where one remote sensor fires all cameras.

Turkeyhunter,
This means that I do not need 120 volts to check and monitor my camp? Ideal for my situation I think.
Thanks

you add this to your cell contract (10 a month i think) and it sends you a pic as soon as it takes it....any critter or crooks, and it they steal the cam---you get a pic of them sent to you----for evidence---- one more thing you have to have cell service where this trail cam is located.

Yes TH I've seen those - they are interesting, thanks for the reminder.
- I called AT&T, adding another "SIM card" to my existing service is $9.99/mo - because I have weak cell reception at my place, need to power a cellphone amplifier full-time, and the solar system must cover that draw. - have to think about how to hide the camera.
Upside, of course.... is getting photos+notification at the moment of the intrusion,,,, ( until the jerk packs up my cellphone amp! ).

Xlink Looks like a decent idea, they are appx $80-120 plus you need a dedicated, (& charged) bluetooth cellphone (&plan) onsite, that it will control via bluetooth. I guess you might be able to listen to what's going on thru the phone, but lots of reviews say the sound is really bad.

Search this on Amazon: " xlink bluetooth gateway" , you can read lots of reviews there from people actually using them. Not sure how reliable these things are..... Also watch for 12v powered if thats what you need.
