Does anyone know if a Douglas Fir Ceiling beam will span 14 feet at 32" on center. The beam joists will support the open ceiling of the 1st floor, which will be tougne and groove 2 x 6 (1 1/2" x 5 1/2") flooring for the second floor. The load required for the floor is 40/10. The second floor is a bedroom

THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY. All I could find at these sites were for 2 x 10. No info on 4 x 10 material.

That's right, the AWC does not do beams, just joists and rafters of normal construction sizes. . You could have a look at the calcs on this page www.timbertoolbox.com I saw a link to there someplace and have found it handy at times. You need to figure out the weight of the floor and contents and divide it as to how much each beam would carry and go from there. Or you could estimate with the AWC calc. If you count two 2x6 will actually be stronger than a single 4x6 if I remember that correctly. But the single 4x6 would look better than a sandwich.
