I thought about getting a mill and setting it up. However, I wanted to cut some large timbers, 10"x10"x20 plus feet, and I have no real log handling equipment. There was no way I could move a full log that big so I milled them where they fell. Even then, it was a trick to move the timber with an ATV.

A different slant on the building supplies issue....
On January 18 I ordered two overhead (garage) doors, 16 ft wide x 8'9" high (5 panels high instead of 4 panels like a normal garage door opening). I was told that it would be 8 to 10 weeks before they would arrive, about a month longer than orders made in past more normal times. Okay. Not only is it a special size but I wanted the extra insulation (R18.4).
Well, today after a lengthy conversation, including on-hold time while the store there were ordered from talked to the factory, I was given a new expected-by date. June 18. The reason given was an inability to obtain the required type of insulation.
My more cynical side believes the delay may be due to the nations large home builders buying so many doors for their new homes and receiving priority for their orders. At least the prices on these have not shot upwards like lumber.
The number of new homes being built in the ABQ area is phenomenal. I've worked in new developments. Last week I was in the big city and had a look around one of the new subdivisions. They are building so many new homes and with such speed that it was hard to navigate some of the streets as there were so many tradesmen trucks parked on both sides of the street. Two concrete pumpers and a procession of transit mixers pouring new slabs on one new street. And the houses are huge. Some with both a 16 and an 8 wide garage door set.

There's a lot to be said for that. I have a good size tractor/loader and still getting the log up, balanced, in place and chocked on the track, squared up and even (my 25' logs tapered 3-5" from end to end) takes a lot of time, often more than the actual cutting. The results are satisfying though when you can get a bunch of slabs. The bigger mills I've seen have hydraulics that move and hole the log.
Be nice if they came up with a bandsaw that rigged up similar to an Alaskan.

A friend in the motorcycle business told me yesterday sales are booming, everybody's got money to burn. He applied for stimulus relief to buy a fork lift, gov gave him $200K! Pay it back whenever, if ever.
