My Restore screwup was an impulse buy of $300 of prefinished aluminum oxide black oak stair nosing thinking that I could strip it and refinish it to a natural finish. Dumb, dumb, dumb, right. Tried three types of ("amazing" according to the labels) paint stripper. It just sat there. Yeah, I'm an idiot and I did know that polyurethane is a plastic but I tried anyway. Plane and/or sand? No bloody way! I finally got smart, donated it back and bought unfinished nosing.
However, I did find the matching oak boards for the treads at a Restore for about a 1/3 of the new price. Did the basement stairs to match the style going up to the second floor. (A stair company had come in to give me a quote we'll over a thousand dollars and said that they 'don't do and won't do' the fancy nose job that our original contractor had done. He'd wrapped the nosing over the stringer.)
