me and dog were at our new property today, found a wet spot so I poked the shovel down about a foot. I could see a trickle of water coming in. I opened up the hole a bit deeper and wider. I came back about a half hour later and the water is flowing to the top of the hole.
if this turns out to be a constant source of water how would I turn it into a well?

Sound like you found yourself a small spring on your new property. Wow. Just start by digging it out with a shovel or post hole diggers and see how much flow you are receiving. In my part of the world we are having a very, very dry spring season and this discovery here at this time would mean a lot of water in the normal wet season and the winter months.

I ran a garden hose down the bank and let it syphon. I was back there today and its still going, it has been running out the hose for 4 days now.
I guess the real test will be later in the summer to see if it dries up.

interesting article and should provide some baseline to think about in making your find into a well.
