I've been a bit indecisive about posting this but here goes:
http://dailyjournalonline.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/clampitt-fortner-sentenced- for-murder/article_2da96b04-817e-53db-92a5-291e6493b4c5.html
Above is the conclusion from an old case here in southeast Missouri. Basically for those who chose not to read the article, a couple dopeheads decided to burgle a man's cabin. One of them peeked into the cabin, saw the owner asleep, and basically executed him.
I do not post this as a scare tactic; I post it as a warning. It doesn't matter if you are in Missouri, Canada, or California; there are crazy people and lunatics out there. Do what is necessary to protect you an yours.
If you feel comfortable and able with a firearm, bring one with you to your cabin. There are also now LED battery powered security lights that will run all season on D batteries. These are a great choice for on and off grid cabins.

Some versions can even be linked to turn on adjacent lights when activated. I plan on installing these on my cabin this summer. I speculate that had the cabin owner above had similar lights, his death may have been averted.
I personally have had more than one strange run in in at my cabin. As is apparent from my username, my cabin is on a river; specifically a cool clear southern Missouri river which is great for swimming and fishing. One of the downsides to my property is that it is bisected by a dead end county road with my cabin lying on one side and the river the other. A few years ago the local swimming hole (aka where the everyone trespassed to go swimming) was shut down by the property owner. This led people to search for other properties to access the river. This is particularly aggravating as the state has a perfectly good and free park where everyone can swim BUT as one trespasser informed me, "we wanted someplace private". Anyway, two years ago this June, I was down working on my cabin with a friend. A run down car stopped in front of my cabin. I waved and walked up and the female driver asked where the "public access" was located on the road. I politely informed her that up the road was only other cabins and private property. Before she could respond, the tattooed shirtless male in the passenger seat says, "F*** YOU, You can't F***ing stop me from getting in the river". To the female's credit, she attempted to apologize for his behavior while he continued to curse my existence. Mind you this classy behaviour was going on as at least two young kids were in the back seat. I just wished her a good day and walked back to the porch.
Anyways, there are crazy people out there. Protect yourself to the best of your abilities.

In Hawaii all beaches are public property, but there are not necessarily public accesses to every stretch of beach. No Tresspassing signs abound, some people put up barbed wire to stop people from walking through their property on the way to a beach. So, it's nice to be near water, but...
As for the shooting, that could (and does) happen anywhere in our violent society. But, every year tens of thousands of people go out camping or staying in cabins throughout California, and the worst thing that happens is a bear steals the cookies they left on the picnic table overnight.
In a country of 300 million people, with the same number of guns circulating around, stuff is gonna happen. But I don't think I'm going to arm to the teeth in preparation for an Armageddon of drug addicted zombies attacking my cabin at 3am. The media splatters this kind of thing in front of us every time it happens, but the odds of it happening to you are probably less than getting hit by lightning or winning the lottery.

Actually, it is kind of a pain in the ass to be on water. I sometimes feel like I'm running a park instead of enjoying my cabin.
My wife and I have a term we call the "parade" As I said above, the road I am on dead ends about a mile up from my cabin. Above us are six cabins and I know all the owners personally. Nonetheless when the weather get's warm, the "parade" of slowly moving cars full of people I don't know starts. They drive slowly up the road looking for a place to park and then come flying back down when they find that all the owners are present.
It's also nice to go to your cabin and find someone has already enjoyed your porch/firepit/patio (and left you evidence thereof). Or better yet to find them CURRENTLY enjoying same. The best is when they then tell you they have permission to be on the property and you don't know them.
I try to not be an ass about it have yet to call the Sheriff on anyone but it does get tiring.

My Grandmother lived alone in the Ohio River Valley in a country home.
She had a loaded double barrel shotgun beside her bed.
She left the keys in her car because if that was what a thief wanted to steal they would just take it and leave her alone.
Nobody ever took her car and she never had to use her shotgun.
This was a long time ago,she died in 1977.

There are far easer cabins to break into than ours! One advantage of being water access.

There is Evil in the world and unless you live inside the local police station, one should take proper precaution to protect ones life. These dope heads will steal anything to obtain money for the next fix. As the duke said (John Wayne) " Life is tough, it is even tougher if you are stupid"
Ruger LC9 can be had for a little over $ 200 in most LGS in my part of the world. Cheap insurance policy for any cabin owner or cabin user. The life you save may turn out to be your own.

Quoting: bldginsp It didn't save the life of the guy who was shot in his sleep Asleep on the couch with the door unlocked? Bad deal, but you can not ever have 100% assurance some bad guy is not coming in the house in the middle of the night. Could be they broke down the locked door and he was asleep and did not have sufficient time to respond. Point here is, there are bad people out there and they do not think anything about breaking in the door and coming in the house/cabin after you and anything they want that is inside.

If it wasn't for the 300 million guns in circulation it would happen alot more often. Those who aren't armed are terrified of being shot by those who are. This country has a huge number of meth heads, thugs and low lifes. A isolated cabin would be a great place to rob, rape and torture. Knowing that easily 50% of folks in said cabins are armed and will kill you sorry butt keeps most of them looking for empty places. Gotta have a dog at the cabin, best alarm system you can have.

Of course, my neighbor's chihuahua thinks he's a lethal weapon
