Hi Folks,
This is for Your Information & Consideration.
I know that recently there has been a lot of news babble about the Flint Water issues and Lead Contamination BUT it's worse than what a lot o people want to admit. Most of us have our own wells (at our cabins anyways) and many folks make assumptions and move on without too much thought. I used to but learned a few painful lessons over the decades.
PLEASE READ THIS ARTICLE Reuters News special-report usa-water-lead/
While this addresses the USA specifically, this is NOT UNIQUE TO USA ONLY ! Regardless of what Nation your in, do have your water tested properly for everything.
SPECIFICALLY NOTE the 2 paragraphs regarding Hard / Acidic water & Galvanized Pipe in the well releasing Lead. (BTDT and hence why all mine is PEX, Brass & Stainless, no solder at all.)

When I lived in New Hampshire, there was a LOT of well contamination. That was a state that used groundwater for town and city water supplies and yikes! One of my closest friends lived on the street where one of the contaminated wells was -- in fact, the street was named Smith Well Road. She'd gotten cancer in her 30s and there were clusters of cancers and other serious health problems in that area.
I'm taking a wait-and-see approach as to whether I'm going to explore drilling a well at my cabin. Water depth may be prohibitively expensive, anyway, but there are a lot of springs in the area and companies that will deliver bulk spring water via tanker truck. It's not terribly expensive and my use will be small, especially since I'll be reusing greywater for my greenhouse and landscape watering.
So filling my cisterns via rainwater catchment and bulk water delivery may be my best and safest choice.

Very interesting article. I always assumed the lead was from municipal water sources and not private wells.
Before we started using our well, we had a comprehensive test done for everything (including lead). It was clear of anything harmful. A few years ago, my husband was tested for lead because his previous business dealt with it a LOT! He was clear.
This is a very good article to make people aware what could be out there. Thank you for posting it!!!

Always test new wells or new to you wells for heavy metals and biologic's. Then annually for biologic's. Here in the Yukon it was 250.00 for the first test of everything. Local Health department will test biologic's for free if you bring in a sample.

Lead in the source water is rarely a problem, whether municipal or private. The lead, if you have it, comes from the piping and/or solder used in the distribution system that gets the water from the source to your faucet. Even if you have lead in your plumbing system, it will stay put unless your source water is corrosive (has some salt in it). That was Flint's problem.

Typical sources for lead are indeed the solder, coatings etc as found in older plumbing, no doubt there. Lead is only one of many possible toxins that can be found in your water but one that most folks are aware of (for the time being as the collective memory fades after 8-10 months)
Do be aware that fertilizer's (Nitrates + ) also contain various salt's which are absorbed by the soil and passed to the aquifer / water tables. Other farming chemicals can and DO affect your water quality over time.
