In 2014, Owen Christensen (long term member here) and his crew built my cabin in Northern Minnesota. Owen started a thread on hear titled "New Design Going Up" and chronicled his challenges and progress of the build. They did a great job and were back in 2015 to build a bunkhouse for me and finish a few details on the main cabin.
I thought some of you that followed Owen's thread might like to see some updates. Also, I thought this might be an opportunity to share what you got accomplished this year.
First off, in the spring, my crew and I got the exterior stained. 20150505_121841.jpg

I tried my hand a tile work and installing ledger stone on the wall in the corner where the wood burner sits. Not to bad of results if I do say so myself. ( and no, I don't know why half my pictures are posting sideways)

Owen, Kelsey, and John managed to get another bunkhouse built. I created and added a new light to the front porch. 20151104_082939.jpg

And last but definitely least, it's insulated and wired. As long as the little Honda's purring we have lights and ceiling fans and with the wood burner going it actually warms up. That's Owen and John relaxing after a hard days work.

That should have said not least. Heat and light is a big improvement.
The next one will be running water. The supply system to get water from the lake is done. Running it to a shower and flush toilet is the next priority. The lovely bride has told me I'm going to get real lonely up there if I don't get her running water and a flush toilet this year.
Owen and crew will be back in the spring to work on a deck out back so Papa has a place to grill.
So, what did you get done this year. Please share.

GS, why don't you use a composting toilet? It seems a shame to pump all that clean water from the lake and then contaminate it with human waste and then just flush it back into the ground.

Our big project for 2015 was adding the screen porch and new windows.
Goals for 2016 include cleaning up our pond, installing the solar system, making trails and building a new wood stand. Probably a bit ambitious consider how often we get up there

I finished off my log sauna project and installed some lighting for it. I also started on a new, bigger wood shed I will finish in the spring. My plans for 2016 include some clean up around the property and relaxing and enjoying the place. Gs your place looks awesome. It looks like Owen did a great job!

gsreimers, your cabin turned out real nice. Our own resident Owen does nice work.
I trimmed out my solar well in April of 2015, long time in the making. Had the well drilled in 2006, been 9 years. I did a livestock well set up, IE flip switch,. water flows at 2.8 gallons a minute)
Because of an approaching forest fire that should of burnt my 40 acres and cabin TWICE, but I was spared, I went over there ahead of the fires, thick smoke, working feverishly to clear trees from around my cabin, clear the ground, trim all lower branches from trees close to the cabin. I was successful and figure I upped the odds of preserving the cabin by 10 fold.
I survived, its a miracle how it burnt around me. My area was totally surrounded, but I was left untouched.
I did get my outside 4X6 cedar shower also done last year along with a 150 gallon water tower.
So this year, I will have the pile of debris I cleared burnt away and about 30 yards of gravel brought in. My cousin is picking up a new 39HP Kubota with backhoe, he is bringing that over to spread gravel, clear a wide trail around the inside of the barb wire fence line. This will allow access to make repairs but aid as a fire break also.
I will also bring over the new all steel 1/4" plate wood stove I built for 2016. I have more decor I have been collecting for the inside also.
I may set it outside and start a fire in it just to get the paint burnt in ahead of time to avoid the stink at the cabin.

We put some masonry on our kitchen island.
Framed and enclosed under the deck.
Put in a food plot for the deer and turkey.
Put in a vapor barrier in the cellar, and installed a de-humidifier.
Had a pole barn/garage built.
Made a few new paths through the forest. Thinned out some underbrush and put up a swing on an old oak tree for my wife. 😃
Oh, and I trimmed out the shrubs out of the pawpaw patch!

Red Agony, hey, is that your old truck, the 5 window Chevrolet? Love it. My brother has a 51 5 window. He now has a 350, muncie 4 spd and its all been updated, but still looks stock.
OK, back on topic. Nice work, great cabin, nice to see a good solid floor with load that is laid out well. 51chevtop.jpg

Yes it's a 5 window, just an average paint job. I rebuilt the transmission and 235 6 cylinder that came in it. It was a basket case and put it back to pretty much original, but we don't baby it as you can see. Used it for hauling firewood twice this week. If mine looked as good as your brothers I don't think I would be doing that. Thanks for asking!

This place was vacant for 6 years and was occupied by 2 different families over 40 yrs. The last family lives in Germany, the husband (CEO of Telecommunications)passed in 2009 and the wife never came back. I took possession in spring of 2015.
It came with 5 structures full of junk, the following pics are some of the stuff I either gave away or took to the dump. Don't even ask lol. There were also another 22 batteries that went with the car, just so the guy would come and get it as it was some distance to the scrap yard. Gave this away!
| These plus 11 hoppeck batteries
| 5 piles like this
| 4 truckloads of electronics.

Dug and laid many trailer loads of sod, since evidently I can't grow a lawn from scratch in the mountains.
Rebuilt a 10' picnic table. Nice 'n solid now.
Biggest accomplishment was replacing my entire propane piping system. Thanks to a lot of good advice from folks here on scf I was able to tackle this and the results were terrific.
Also got a head start for spring: thanks to C/L I was able to find vinyl replacement windows, all in excellent condition, for next to nothing.
I'm super excited for spring to arrive.

Well, I do appreciate the sentiment, but where I am the soil is so thin, as is the carpet of lawn, that 2x a year is pretty much all that's required.
I like the green coverage because it really helps in keeping dirt off the floor inside. Wifey will have it no other way. I really wanted a pine needle duff floor around the outside since we're in a pine forest. I lost.

Haltzy - noticed two plugs running off the 1000w inverter. I assume these go to a distribution box with circuit breakers? How did you tie these in?
