Thanks neb. I finished up the carving and sanding this evening. I decided to leave it more like a decoy and not try to make it completely life-like. I did sand it smooth instead of leaving all the knife marks.
I even managed to get a start on the painting...
Lots more painting to do. There are so many white dots/spots on a loon....
Will post more when I am finished.

I finished up painting my loon carving and got some clear finish on it. I am very happy with the way it turned out. Can't wait to get up to the cabin on our next trip. Thinking about carving it a mate. I have enough basswood left. Also thinking about maybe trying a fish (black crappie, maybe). We will see.
Anyway here are some pictures of the finished loon...

Very nice! I would think the painting part would be a challenge. You did an outstanding job.
