I was getting my woodburner cleaned up and ready for cold weather.I needed something to clean the glass with . I looked in the kitchen cleaning supplies but was out of what I needed. So looking around I found some scrubbing bubbles foam with bleach in the bathroom.
I thought what the heck, I'll give it a try.
Let me tell you! It cleaned the built up soot off with one spray. I sprayed it on then wiped it off and finished it up by rinsing with clear water.
Best cleaner for that job that I have ever found.

If you run out of that cleaner just use a damp paper towel and ashes. Then wipe off with a clean damp paper towel followed by a dry one.

This fall we would close down the dampers on the wood burner at night so I wouldn't have to get up as often to reload it. In the morning the glass would be pretty smoke covered. Once we were up and moving around we would add a couple of logs and open up the dampers and in an hour or so the smoke on the glass was gone.

We use glass top electric stove cleaner, it was recommended to us by our Jotul dealer. I use a damp paper towel first to just get the loose char off the glass then follow that with a little cleaner, and buff clean with old newspaper. I find that it works very well and does not scratch or etch the glass with chemicals.

This is why I love this site. Answers to just about any questions are here... if one only asks!
I kind of forgot to ask about this..
I've been dreading scrubbing my stove glass again. Three times I've tried, nearly successful, but still the toughest residue couldn't be removed. I mean I scrubbed hard. Broke a darn sweat even.
Now I'm ready to battle glass again,, this time with enthusiasm
Thanks for this write up

I use 0000 steel wool. It won't scratch glass! It will load up fairly quickly.

Also any cleaner with ammonia (most window cleaners) with newspaper can help with the cleanup but might need a bit more elbow grease.

After many years of having a wood burning fireplace I have found wet newspaper with a bit of wood ash will get rid of all the stuck on residue. Then a wipe with a wet paper towel and then dry it with a clean paper towel and it is ready to go. No nasty chemicals to be breathing or getting on your hands.

I also found if we burn good wood (birch where we are is the best) there may be a build up of soot but that can be just wiped off with a dry paper towel and there is hardly any residue on the glass at all. I suspect if we used a soft wood like spruce or pine with resin the glass would get dirtier much faster.
