I needed a walking bridge from my cabin to my studio. It needed to be strong, 55' span, cheap, and a quick build. Some free pallets, a few salvaged 2x4"s, some peeled popular logs left over from my cord-wood studio project and $4.20 worth of spikes and I had a walkable bridge. Still work to be done with bracing, railings and cosmetics but the main structure is in place. To see more photo's check out my blog at www.georgeduncandesign.com

That's Chica on the bridge... she does have a strong presence. Sir Rufford my other land dog totally avoids the bridge... he's chase a moose but refuses to cross the bridge.

Where to get pallets?
Pretty much any company that receives products on skids is happy to give them away. They fill a dumpster quickly and truckers don't like bringing them back for reuse.
One of the methods I use to get rid of the skids my company produces are project details of what you can make from skids.
There's hundreds of clever ideas out there. Wine racks to simple garden walls.

Borrego, check with your local USPS. They usually have loads of clean pallets. I'm very lucky, my neighbor at home subcontracts thru the post office installing the cluster boxes found virtually everywhere here. Boxes are ordered and shipped, unbanded and that's it. No chemical treatment or paint..just clean wood useable for many projects. Great for firepit as well. He even gets big, heavy plastic ones as well. I just hauled probably 100 of them from his yard across the street waiting to be broke down and hauled to the cabin.

Search "pallets" in your local Craigslist. That's how I find them. If that doesn't work, cruise the nearest industrial area and look for stacks of them out back. Then go in and ask. To many places they are trash, but some do reuse them so best to inquire before taking.

Pallets are in abundance in Alberta. Most places are happy to get rid of them. The ones used in the pallet bridge are from my local building supply co-op at Drumheller. Some are hardwood... nice for heating the cabin and studio.
Thanks for asking.
Below are images of the cabin I built using pallets... The Pallet Palace. More pictures along with a story on my site... www.georgeduncandesign.com

Thanks upndown.
I built my wood-shed with discarded pallets as well. I bought slabs directly from a small, 4 generation sawmill "like the Waltons" and attached them vertically over the pallet walls. 2x4's were used for rafters strapped with 1"x4" perlins then sheeted with galvanized metal. Total cost just under $100.00.
