I am interested in purchasing an Ashley Direct Vent 12,000 BTU heater for my cabin and was wondering two things - does anyone have experience with this heater and does it require any special size propane tank? I understand some such heaters require a large tank - but I would like to use a 25 or 50 lb model so I can bring it home during the winter when I'm not using the cabin.
Thanks for your suggestions.

To be clear, you wish to bring home the tank, not the furnace right?

Yes - the tank. I understand that propane tanks can get a little "thick" if left out in the real cold weather we get here in Minnesota. I figure it's easier to just leave it in my garage at home until I go to the cabin in the winter.

I leave propane outside year long without problems. I'm a fair bit further North than Minnesota.
20Lb Tanks are standard BBQ tanks, 40Lb tanks are nice for the extra fuel, 100Lb is the max size you can furtle around with... Usually anything bigger requires a commercial delivery of fuel. Propane Exchange places mostly only handle 20Lb BBQ types.
TSC Tractorsupply.com and their retail stores often have great sales on the tanks if you want to go bigger than 20Lb.

We never had issues with our 100's tanks in Northern On when I lived there. I remember the temps hitting well below -50 f.

any size tank will work, just won't last as long. But no need to bring them home for winter. Won't hurt them at all. Propane just vapourizes slower in very cold temps, which can make your furnace run low when the tanks are real cold out. But leaving a tank in freezing temps will not hurt it. Once its warm they will work just like they never froze.

A 12,000 btu heater is pretty small but will eat up the propane if left on to cycle on and off continuously. Don't know how long a 20 lb. tank would last. I plan to get two 40 lb. for a similar heater, but I'm only using it to supplement a woodstove, not depending on it for heat the entire time I'm there.
