I am going to start cutting some trails and having a small venue would be nice, but I can not justify spending 10,000 plus on a utv and good 4 wheeler is not much better. Does anyone use something different to get around or ideas for something a bit more practical?

Wow, my answer will not appeal as I have always have a 4WD utility quad and just added a brand new Kawasaki Mule 610 XC SE. I couldn't imagine my 40 acres without one or the other. The place is big enough, I'd spend way too much time walking and not gettign much done plus the multiple trips to get tools out on the ranch. Quad had a 2500 lb winch, Mule has a 3500 lb winch, but also a roof, windshield, street legal lighting kit. This is going to be just what the doctor ordered. Look around on craiglist, you can get a ATV for a decent price. I am going to see how the new Mule navigates, then determine if I will sell my quad if the Mule handles the task. Gary O here had shown interest and if he wants it if I decide to sell it, I am giving him first crack at it.

Honda Rubicon is how I get around on my 40 acres. Suits me fine. Plenty of selections on Craigslist as toyota mentioned. Old Honda 3 wheelers are cheapest yet still enjoyable. And they get jobs done. I love my Honda. My ride is 11 years old. Never any issues.

I just have 5 acres so I get my tools around with my Tacoma 4WD.
My neighbor has 40 acres and he has an old Dodge Powerwagon with the winch with direct PTO drive off the transmission. That old truck has been through the wringer and looks it, but still chugs along and climbs the hills. Makes me wonder if it would be worth getting an old Toyota 4wd for the same purpose. Wouldn't put many miles on it, so it could be old and funky. But it would use a lot of gas

there are some fellas down the way that rip around on those little minibikes that look like choppers. the one lad put a small hitch on his and has a wee trailer for carrying tools to do trail maintenance. even hauls small loads of sand.
works for him. and it's a blast rippin' through the trails. he's gone really overboard. has solar lights for at night. a little tent camp with fire pit etc.
I have a tractor. 4x4. Low gearing. FEL. Backhoe. Bringing it from the house to the camp I got held up by construction. chatted up the nice young lady with the flag. as I'm leaving she says to me "now keep it slow through the construction"

I did pick up an ATV for fairly cheap. My main use of it is as a mule as I have a little trailer I haul behind it. My wife has other plans for it. She goes down all of the back roads for hours at a time. For my woods I still enjoy using my mountain bike. During winter I X-country ski. Actually I finish creating my biathlon trail. Something I've always wanted to try. I know I can ski and I know I can shoot. But doing both is not so easy. I want to know if I can.

There are a lot of quad atv vehicles available used, but very few utility type with a box to carry stuff. And some the atvs are cheap, the utility type are not. So I've wondered about getting an older atv and mounting a box on the back, or maybe a little trailer. Anyone done this?

I haul a basic garden trailer behind mine like the type a garden tractor would pull. First thing I had to do is beef up the tires. The ones that came with it were junk. TSC had wheels/tires that worked fine

We use this. A 2012 Polaris RZR 900 xp 4 seater. This gets me around my 8 acres and the surrounding national forest pretty well.
I got lucky. Used to be BIG into rockcrawling and I had a guy offer to swap me this for my 'Crawler. It was a very good trade.

Buy a name brand Japan designed UTV and keep the maintenance on it and it will last 25=35 years. Honda, Kawasaki and Yamaha have been designing this stuff for decades now. I personally think Honda is the longest lasting ones. Have a neighbor who still drives his '88 honda ATV all the time. The side by side UTV with a dump bed is hoot and something like a 2 WD Kawasaki 610 mule can be purchased new around 6 or 7K, you do not need a total decked out UTV if you can not afford it, just like you are not driving a 4WD Porsche Cayenne if you can not afford one. There is a used market out there but the UTV run forever and no one wants to part with theirs except went the want a new one with more bells and whistles.

I have a Suzuki Vinson and the wife has a 500 Arctic Cat that we get around our 80 acres on. the wife's bike has a 2" receiver hitch and we pull a 4x6 trailer around with it. The trailer has 2ft sides so we use it for wood or what ever we need.

naturelover66 >>>that is the way to go! If I lived full time at the cabin that is what I would have. I have 80 acres and would have plenty of grass but not being there full time just wouldn't work for me.
I get around on foot but my place is very rough badland country.

The trucks go from daily driver, to farm use tags, to strictly on farm no tags unsafe at any speed yeehaa and loads of fun, to parts, to the crusher. I saved the last riding mower with plans to remove the deck and weld a little box behind the seat. The long term dream is to get a little electric golf car and hook a waterwheel to an alternator by the creek for charging.

We don't use this so much to get around the property as much as just to get to it. 3 miles over swamps and through the woods. This was last Saturday. Hopefully, next time in will be with the snowmobiles.

The practical ride in WV is an ATV. They can be used anywhere except a road with painted lines.

I use a Toyota 4runner with good tires, they have a factory locking rear diff, heat, decent power, put a winch on it and it will do most things... Plus you can drive it to the store. They can be had for $2000 if you Craigslist shop. Lots of guys like Suzuki sidekicks as well, they're a bit smaller.

Dave, my state passed a law several years ago, a UTV, ATV or ORV motorcycle, as long as you add the street legal lighting kit, you can convert them for road use, but limited to roads with a speed of 35MPH or less. Drawback, you must buy street and OHV license (2) for the rig. I took advantage with it on my new side by side and considering it with my quad too.

Forgot to post this mode of transportation. It isn't very helpful at gathering firewood or clearing snow from the driveway, but its my go-to transport when I blow my back out and need to get from the car into the chiropractor!!LOL Sorry to say, but its newer than my other modes of transportation. P.S. I haven't had time to camoflauge it yet.

Using dirt Bikes, decided to wait on the UTV until this spring. Will be trying to trade one of my sportbikes for it and if that doesn't work out, than just purchase a new one outright. If I am planning on wearing it out over the years, than it makes sense to purchase new rather than inherit someone's problem as well some of the used vehicle prices don't always offer much in the way of savings when considering some of the deals the vendors are offering these days... low to zero percent financing, cash accessories, etc, etc.
And it still does pay to look around, even taking note of people with offerings off their / on their property when you are driving by - lots in the way of ATV's, UTV's, dirt bikes, snowmobiles, etc.

I noticed that too. Maybe a few hundred in savings so not really worth it.
We might jump on a UTV in the spring as well so if you find a dealer giving a killer deal... please share the intel

I notice that as well, it was really within a few hundred dollars and rarely over a thousand. Just as all the posters are saying and or acknowledging, most people keep their units for long periods of time, especially Honda's, Yamaha, Toyota's, etc and therefore you are either getting things at the end of their lifespan, or if the unit is newer - close to new sale prices, so it makes some sense to just purchase new and wreck things myself from the onset
Sportsman shows, motorcycle show, outdoor show, cottage shows, sometimes vendors have good deals or incentives but everything is relative.
After reading this thread and having to wrap my brain around typing UTV opposed to ATV, it got me thinking or wondering if going with an UTV isn't a better idea, in case of company, dog, other types of utility work, etc. Never been big on passengers - exactly why I have ridden something motorized since I was very young, but I guess it is never too late to learn to play well with others?
Especially since the laws in Ontario recently changed for UTV's and such.
Damn you people and your ideas, progress and just general helpfulness of information......I can no longer pretend to be ignorant, well I could but having access to this site would make me extra ignorant...lol..lol.
Expanding search engine and will report back to headquarters as best I can LW as best I can...we are about to enter the dark months..lol..lol.

My neighbor had his tractor stolen off his property, so I am little hesitant to leave an ATV or UTV at my place. Bringing them back and forth would be out of the question because my truck and trailer are always full of tools and projects when I go to my cabin. A horse would be awesome but I am not there enough to have one, many after retirement. I am thinking an old 80's Toyota pickup or an old ranger, Sonoma or sidekick/tracker. I have been looking on Craigslist, I have seen a few promising leads for 1200-1500 (about the same price range as a low end ATV) and a hell of a lot harder for some asshole to load up on their trailer. Looks like I will have to learn to drive a stick.
