The water level of our lake goes down about 5 feet during the summer, making it too difficult for our 1/2 hp self-priming Shallow Well Jet pump to bring water up to the cottage by about this time of year. So we're thinking about moving the pump down the slope toward the lake to decrease the rise.

Could we leave the pressure tank under the cottage, where it currently sits 4 feet from the pump, with 1 1/4" hose attaching them, and move just the water pump about 50 feet away (about 4 feet lower). And could we still use 1 1/4" pipe that would be 50 feet long? We have 1 1/2" pipe running from the pump to the lake.

Would we need special wire to go that 50 feet from the cottage? the current wire has a metal casing and runs only a foot.

* Can we have the pump 50 feet from the pressure tank
* Do we use 1 1/4" pipe for the 50 feet between Pressure Tank and Pump
* What type of wire should we use, it would run outside to the pump.

I'm not sure about the particulars of jet pumps, but here's what I know based on installation of deep well submersible pumps-

-would moving the pump make any difference at all? You still have to pump water the same vertical distance (total head) to supply the cabin. Could be you need a 3/4 horse pump.

-should be no problem having the pump 50 feet from the tank. Pipe size must be calc'd into the total dynamic head computation. 1-1/4 pipe provides a lot less resistance than 1". What is total rise from lake to shower head, and what pressure setting is the tank at? Total length of pipe?

-wire size is a function of horsepower and length of wire. Pump makers publish charts that correlate the factors. 50 feet is not much, particularly for a 1/2 horse motor. What size wire are you using now?

#12 wire is good up to 160 feet with a 1/2 horse motor.

bldginsp is right on with both, shouldn't make any difference where the pump is, it is moving the same water the same distance. As long as the inlet is under the water, it should function normally even with less water in the lake as you have only lost ~2 psi. If it is effecting it than the pump is right at the edge of its limits and a larger pump is in order.

any shallow well jet pump can only suck a max of about 20 ft. but it can push at least 100 ft. so putting it closer to the water will help a lot . A two line deep well jet pump can suck 100 ft.. IF the old pump is worn and needs to be replaced it might be more cost effective to leave it were it is and replace it with a 2 line deep well jet pump.
