Hey Folks Meetup planning for our local Cabin Lovers.

This thread is being posted as it sort of got started in another thread related to Unorganized Townships of Ontario, so as to not hijack that thread.

There are a number of us in Eastern / North Eastern Ontario and a few others realized that we aren't all that far apart (as the sober crow flies anyways).

DATE: TBD
Well sometime in the spring, certainly after the nasty white stuff is gone... Maybe end of April ?

LOCATION - LOCATION:
This is a bit of a toughy but the Town of Kaladar Ontario was floated as a semi central point. Also there is one seriously excellent Burger Joint there on the corner where the old Hotel was.

Ideas, Suggestions and Things to Ponder are all welcome, so chime in and let's see what kind of frackas we can raise !

Sounds awesome. Might have to ride the motorcycle over since it seems everyone there is on a bike Except...mine is a sport bike..so maybe better leave it at home as they're mostly Harleys

I haven't ridden a bike in many years but still get that danged "Spring Fever" where I can't get that line "I Don't want a pickle, just wanna ride my motor-cicle" outta my head. It fades eventually but geez, you'd think after 20 yrs....

Yeah, there are a lot of bikes and the tell tale Black & Orange theme is sort of an invitation isn't it.

mine is a sport bike

Never leave the bikes at home, especially the sport bikes....even Harley guys deserve to look cool from time to time, and there is no better way than riding with sport bikes

Direct quote from Sonny Barger (former Hell's Angel President) "
"it has always been important for hells angles to ride american made machines. in terms of pure workmanship, personally i dont like harleys. i ride them cause i am in the club and and that is the image, but if i could, i would seriously consider riding a HONDA ST1100 or a bmw. we really missed the boat not switching over to the japanese models when they began building bigger bikes. ill usually say "!!!! harley davidson". you can buy an ST1100 and the mother!!!!er will do 110 mph right from the factory all day long. while it is too late to switch over now, it would have been a nice move cause japenese bikes today are much cheaper and better built, however they dont have as much personaility."

Thankfully most sportbike riders have a lot of personality to compensate

I'm new around here (just signed up actually) but Kaladar most definitely sounds good to me.
Especially since I recently bought five acres just north of Bon Echo Provincial Park up the road a ways.
I had to tear down two old rotted cabins on my site and am now in the process of building (very slowly) a small storage/guest house and a small cabin.
(Which is what brought me to this site).
I've been going through Kaladar every weekend since I bought my place last year and it would be nice to actually meet some people in the area for a change (other than the guys at the local Home Hardware in Northbrook who I seem to be giving lots of money to recently).

Gid'ay there Sparky ! Welcome to the family... The burger joint is on Winter Hours now but we should all get together sometime in the spring... Besides many folks have closed up already, some still open for hunting season though.

There's a lot of sweet spots to get into up Hwy 41 and off the side roads... Several properties available near Plevna at decent prices but gotta be careful of the local inspectors.... (so I'm told)

I'm busy building ATM trying to get a dried in shell before that "stuff" starts flying, then I'll be working interior all winter.

Kaladar is 2 hrs +/- drive for me... up the line past the frew and deep in the valley ! Cecil Wiggins & Delmer McGregor Country...

Thanks for the welcome Steve_S! and I especially thank you for the info about local inspectors.

That's exactly the kind of stuff I need to know.
As I feared, it's beginning to sound like it may not be a good idea for me to try to build anything and expect to keep it under the radar of the local gestapo.

I was initially told (by the lawyer in Bancroft that was involved with my purchase) that I would need a permit to demolish the abandoned, and junk filled cabins on my land.
I ignored that because not only had I no time for that nonsense but because they had *ahem* apparently mostly rotted away and collapsed on their own due to neglect, weather and voracious insects.

I was hoping that I could discretely finish the rebuilding of the old crumbling well shed (6' x 6') into a more efficient and somewhat larger (12' x 16') tool shed without attracting any attention by the authorities but I'm beginning to think that it will be somewhat harder to explain how insects and rot could not only collapse an old structure but to actually construct a new one in it's place.

Well, my issues aside, I'm exceedingly happy that despite my constant online readings and research concerning small cabins (etc.) that I've actually apparently found a forum where one of the very first threads I see is started from someone who suggests a meeting in Kaladar (that's you) and then a later poster (Pookie129) supplies an obscure yet important quote from Sonny Barger.

I am now a regular.

Cheers to you all!

Welcome to the area sparky. I know the guys well at that home hardware. It is a beautiful area with tons of lakes to explore. They are also great people at Hook's Castle Building centre north of northbrook. Across the road from them is Bishop lake which is a great little hunting store, laundrymat and a place to get propane. The general store at the petro Canada in Northbrook also has tons of stuff. We always joke that if you can't find something you need at the other places, it will be at the petro Canada.
Good luck with your project.

Hey everyone... the end of April is rapidly approaching, and peoples' calendars are probably getting full.

Is anyone still interested in a Kaladar-area meet-up?

I made it through the winter and have already been up to my place once to see how it made it through the winter.
I'm game for some sort of Kaladar-area meetup if one should arise.

Indeed I'm good for it... OK EVERYONE INTERESTED - Chime in as to when would work... May 24 weekend is nutzo weekend and likely we will all be occupied... I'm flexible myself in general.

We are restarting on our cabin after a winter break, Bailey Boxes for windows & doors up next and then onto bigger Hammer Swingin...

I was up at my place today (Friday, April 22) doing a bit of work. It's very wet where I am (the water table is actually above the surface at several spots at my place but that is normal in the spring). I still have a bit of snow in some areas but thankfully there were no bugs out yet which enabled me to do some work for a few hours.

As an interesting side note, when I was heading back home and I was driving west on Flinton Rd. I encountered two OPP vehicles that were parked at the side of the road and two cops that were standing in the middle of the road.
Apparently they were stopping vehicles to do some sort of random Gestapo check.
I was asked if I had any "alcohol or drugs".
I actually laughed out loud at this but did not push it any further and remained civil (although I had previously turned my dash cam towards the driver side window to capture everything just in case).
The cop was an aggressive and humorless jerk and even threatened me with an potential "obstructed vision" fine because of a small bird that I had sitting on my knee.
(I always travel with my tiny parrot).
Seems like a strange place to set up a road block in the middle of nowhere on a Friday afternoon where there is almost zilch traffic.
Maybe it's because it's safer in a location like that for them to beat you senseless, rob you blind and then claim the usual, that you were "resisting arrest".
Generally I have no problem with cops but it was blatantly obvious that these two were thugs and were looking to cause trouble.

No one is suggesting a date, so I will...

the Apr 30th weekend may be too soon, the May 8th weekend is Mother's Day, and May 21-23 is the long weekend, so what about...

Saturday May 14th?

Does anyone have an exact name and/or street address of the "Burger Joint there on the corner where the old Hotel was"?

The place is called "The Spud Box"
Google.CA map
The Kaladar Spud Box and it appears the address is
10208 41 Hwy, Northbrook, ON K0H-1K0

May-24 is the 1st Big Holiday weekend... I suspect everyone has plans by now... It's one of those "special Canadian Weekends" for some of us.

WEEKEND of May 14 is GOOD for me but heck I'm easy... Hold the jokes K

BTW: For those not familiar with it... the Kaladar Area is a hot spot for the OPP Blackshirts but they are focussed more on the DUI & Suspicious Character's on Harley's etc... and it's got a couple of perfect spots for RIDE Checks and Radar Traps over the blind hills.... especially on the south side of 41 towards Erinsville (nice spot around there too BTW).

Personally I have no problems with ride checks . Usually the OPP are just doing their job. If you have not been drinking , be friendly . Personally I wouldn't like to be the guy in the center of the road. They see all kinds of nutty stuff, going on. I have been at a few accident scenes as a first responder. Some of them are messy. Not close to Kaladar, hope you have a good meet. Old243

I will actually be at my cabin that weekend and it's only about a 20 minute drive away so I would be able to make that meet up! Anyone have a good time?

As far as ride checks go, I'm sure that's what sparky mcbiff ran into that he described on the Flinton Rd. They like to set up on back roads like the flinton Rd because quite often, persons who are drinking and driving use the back roads to avoid police, the flinton Rd being one of them. So if you are not drinking and driving, you have nothing to worry about. As far as him feeling the officers were thugs looking for trouble, I'm sorry he felt that way. The OPP have a tough job, dealing with all sorts of people, seeing all kinds of highway carnage and unfortunately a lot of them lost their sense of humour long ago. My experience is, you treat the officers with respect, they will reciprocate. If you feel they do not, there are plenty of avenues to discuss your concerns. No other profession in the world has as much oversite as the police. Not even doctors!!

I for one have no problem with the officers trying to prevent drunk drivers from potentially creating disasters on our highways. ( a recent example being Marco Muzzo killing three kids and the grandfather north of Toronto driving drunk.).

No one objected to my proposed Ontario meet-up date of tomorrow, May 14th, but no one suggested a time, either. Is anyone still interested in getting together? If no one else is going to coordinate this, I will!

I'm going to be at the The Spud Box, 10208 Hwy 41 Northbrook, at the north-west corner of Highways 7 and 41, Kaladar tomorrow at 12:00 noon.

To make it easier to find me, I will be carrying a bright orange hunter's toque (or it will be on the table in front of me). Phone me at 416-999-8757 if you get lost or need directions. If no one else shows up, I'll hang around for an hour before leaving.

Hope to see you there!

Hey there RVNeil... This weekend has turned into a hectic (insanely so) set of adventures for me and the current forecast for tomorrow is Rain & Thunder Storms.

I'm hoping for a lot of rain 1st before any lightning as everything in the bush is so terribly dry and crispy, wouldn't take much to burn our evergreen forest in a big nasty flash.

Yes, unfortunately it looks like tomorrow may be rather wet. However, I'm only in the area for another 2 weeks, and I'm sure that everyone will already have plans for the long weekend.

So, I'm going to show up tomorrow even if I have to bring an umbrella! Hope you can make it anyway.
