Four weeks from today I'll be in Oregon spending time on my land. Hooray!!!!! Plane, train, then automobile but my docs gave the go-ahead.
I booked accommodations figuring it will likely get too cold overnight to camp. I did go through a site that only penalizes you one night's stay if you cancel, though! And no penalty at all if you cancel at least 24 hours before the arrival date.
GaryO and Cabi, would love to meet y'all if you do a trip to KFalls between Oct. 15-20!

cabingal3 Yay! It will! I will be pulling into KFalls on Wednesday, the 15th, on the Coast Starlight Amtrak train from San Fran. (I got an incredible deal on air fare from Dallas to SF.) Now, I've read that the nickname for that train is the Coast Starlate, lol, but it's gotten better over the years. We shall see! I love trains and wanted to give it a go.
Perhaps meeting up that Friday, if that would work for you? We can chat about time and place closer to the day, and I'll give y'all my cell phone number via private/direct message here.
Now I'm doubly excited about my trip!

It will be such fun!
Oh, and I didn't mean to be rude to anyone else. If any cabin folks in the PNW or Cali want to meet up, come on, y'all!
In booking my train trip, I've seen that you can go all over from Klamath Falls. It's just $20 to Eugene and takes 4 hours. Almost doesn't pay to drive. But I think my car and I are going to be doing a lot of 'sploring around the state when I first move there, lol. I ended up saving money by taking the train to Oregon and renting a car in KFalls, as opposed to renting a car in San Francisco and driving up myself.

Julie glad to hear you're mobile again! In 2008 my ladyfriend and I did a 16 day road trip thruout Oregon. Flew into Portland and rented a motor home. We were going to the Waterfront Blues Fest as well as an insulator convention the next day. Closest place we found to park that beast was in Oregon City, right on the river. Quite a drive from the Fest. Especially navigating that big ole boat.
That's when we discovered Public Transportation. Hopped on a bus then a train and yet another bus that dropped us right by the entrance to the Fest. All for a $6 dollar pass, you could go anywhere all day long, and leave the driving to them.
Enjoy yourself!! Lots to see in that Beautiful state.

Thank you, upndown! That sounds like lots of fun!
I'll only be up there for a week, mostly to see how my land is faring in the dryness, get some official stuff done, talk with the contractor in Medford, and make some sketches so I can be ready to get going with the site review and permits in the Spring. I will be very, very glad, though, to escape the Texas heat and to see mountains and huge trees again!
Speaking of festivals, I was SO hoping to get there a lot sooner so I could take in a bit of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival! (I used to teach English Lit.) It's well-regarded and the plays look so interesting! The Oregon Country Fair in Eugene looks like a hoot, too, heh.
I like to leave the driving to others, especially when it's relatively inexpensive! It's nice to be able to enjoy the sights, especially when you're somewhere with so much natural beauty. It sounds like you had a great time!

Julie, walk the land, look it over for placement of your home. Does it have slopes or flat? Think of fires, a safe place. If its elevated, can you bury a water tank and use gravity to supply your cabin? Access to road, visible from road (not always good) . Give it lots of thought and when you have evaluated it all, then get 4 fiberglass markers from Home Depot and set your corners. Take into consideration afternoon sun, a flat roof section for solar panels facing that way. But you dont want snow sliding off in front of your door etc.
Take pictures. Post them here.

Yep, toyota_mdt_tech. A lot of it comes down to septic. There are two, level, beautiful clearings that set back and are about a third of the way into my property that would be great for my cabin and other structures. Beyond those, the land begins to slope upward.
In my previous discussions with the onsite clerk when she asked about my cabin, number of bedrooms, water fixtures, etc., she said compost toilets are permitted and they might OK a holding tank for my cabin. That would be fine by me. I'll have precious little wastewater going into the thing so it wouldn't need to be pumped more than a couple of times per year, I'd imagine, since I'd be reusing my greywater for irrigation, too. But if I need to do a big septic system, then one of those clearings will have to be used for that.
I picked this parcel for the good mix of clearings, forest, level land and slope! I will post pics, such as they'll be from my rather inadequate camera phone, lol.

Thanks, hattie! Yep, I already wrote down Toyota's points to take along with me, lol!
I'm planning on having my solar panels on a rack at ground level, though. One that I can adjust some to maximize sun exposure. This way, I can keep dust, leaves, and pine needles off of them easier, too.
