I want to share these security principles and methods with you to help protect your property.

Understand that security never gets better than 99%. The threat can always bring methods to exceed your security posture. The success of your security is measured by Deterrence and Delay applications that meet or exceed the expected threat.

I'll leave out Detection to a point because of a lack of immediate response force for remote cabins.

The majority of successful intrusions are created by the owner who provides easy access by design. The threat wants to be quick, quiet, and in the dark. So don't provide them with quick, quiet, and in the dark.

If your cabin is very isolated, you can forget the dark part. It won't matter. But is you have neighbors, it is in play. If you have electricity, install photo electric sensor to exterior lights.

The first line of defense is the shell.

DETER and DELAY
Use Windows that fit between 16" OC framing and six feet above grade - resulting glass width of 14" or less. Rationale: The threat will not be able to climb in such a narrow space.

Use exterior metal doors with metal framing, no glass, opens outward, exterior lock bolt guard, with exterior security hinges. Rationale: Classified.

DELAY
Trying to hack through cabin walls is more effort than the possible reward, but is not out of the realm of possibilities. If you have valuables to protect, use one run of wire fencing around the inside framing before the last wall finish.

OTHER
Driveway gate to deter and delay.
Cellular Game Camera. Most game cameras are stolen because of poor installation locations. Use a ladder to install above arm reach.
Leave a low cost vehicle parked in view. Keep it clean. Move it occasionally.

RETROFIT:
Interior rebar across windows. Reverse exterior door to swing outwards and add exterior lock bolt guard and security hinges.

Great advice, Dave.

I believe 'Delay' is the biggie.

Our doors have to open inward due to the snows and ice, but those are great tips where they can apply.
